SUMMARY:Up With Transcendent Fun: 20 Years of Chokecherry!
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n RSVP ON FACEBOOK\n \n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook and Ladder Theater \n\nDoors 7:00pm :: Music 7:30pm \n\n21+ \n\nGA: $10 ADV / $15 DOS\n\n\n\n COVID-19 Policies\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nUp With Transcendent Fun: 20 Years of Chokecherry!\nwith special guests Constant Insult\, Fletcher Coulee\, & Jeffrey Robert Larson \n—– \nChokecherry is bringing together some of our favorite local punk and country acts to celebrate the two decades we have spent (on and off) as a band. Also\, join us to say farewell to Jon as he heads to the East Coast and kicks off yet another Chokecherry hiatus.—Chokecherry is a little group of friends who have been playing a unique blend of fiddle-forward country\, punk and whatever else they want since 2004. From basements and churches to bars and DIY spaces that no longer exist\, Chokecherry has played countless shows yet somehow remain as awkward as ever. See it for yourself. \nConstant Insult: Minneapolis basement lifers Constant Insult formed in 2014. Their driving\, catchy punk rock is built from cathartic harmonies\, colliding guitars\, and frenetic tempos\, all held together with Midwestern desperation and charm. \nFletcher Coulee is named after a ghost that haunted Luc Parker one time so he made a 2020 socially distanced Garageband album about that and other stuff that haunts him including but not excluding local unrest\, rest\, working\, not working\, drinking\, getting up\, and losing your seat while drinking\, and love and lack thereof. \nLuc is a grizzled Mpls veteran of such Grossly underrated local combos as Your Loving Tiger\, Chickadee Mountain Martyrs\, Dentist. and Omega Defender\, as well as forays into composing for low-budget musicals\, foxy boxing\, and such and such. \nJeffrey Robert Larson is a Honky Punk from Minneapolis by way of Wright County\, MN. Jeff has been writing and preforming country music in Minneapolis for close to 15\, and been a part of the DIY music scene for 20 years. Described by Adventures in Americana as “Devastatingly sad songs in the best country tradition”\, Jeff’s song writing uses humor to intensify the sadness he sings about.

The Combo will be performing a FULL night of music from these two iconic funk artists. \nWorld renowned Dr. Mambo’s Combo has been performing weekly at Bunkers Music Bar & Grill since 1987 — one of the longest running weekly residencies anywhere in America. The band quickly became Prince’s favorite — playing soul\, rock\, and r&b music with unmatched passion and fire – and audiences have flocked to their weekly performances ever since. In addition to Prince\, many national touring artists often stop by to sit in with the band after their own show —including John Mayer\, Sheila E\, Questlove\, Stokley\, Larry Graham\, and Bonnie Raitt. \nDr. Mambo’s Combo’s ‘Let Me Have it All’ features a diverse collection of songs across the many eras and styles of these amazing trendsetting artists. Sly Stone rose to popularity with Woodstock era hits ‘Everyday People’ & ‘I Want to Take You Higher’\, and took a surprise turn in the early 70’s with the genre defining funk of ‘Family Affair’ and ‘If You Want Me to Stay’.   \nRufus and Chaka Khan were one of the most popular and influential funk bands of the 1970s\, with four consecutive number-one R&B albums\, ten top 40 pop hits and five number-one R&B singles including ‘Tell Me Something Good’\, ‘Sweet Thing’ and ‘Ain’t Nobody’. \nThe current band lineup features Julius Collins and Margaret Cox on lead vocals\, Sonny Thompson on bass\, Brian Ziemniak on keys\, Geoff LeCrone on guitar and Peter Suttman on drums. Joining the band for this special performance are The Bangbang Horns (Peter Vircks & Riley Helgeson).

SUMMARY:Chuck Mead / Jason Ringenberg
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n RSVP ON FACEBOOK\n \n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nUptown vfw \n\nDoors 6:30pm\nMusic 7:00pm\n21+\nGA: $30 ADV / $35 DOS\n\n*Does not include feesNO REFUNDS \n\n COVID-19 Policies\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n\nChuck Mead / Jason Ringenberg\n\n \n\nChuck Mead is a Country singer with a rock n roll heart. He’s also a renowned songwriter\, producer\, music director\, musicologist and architect behind the rebirth of Lower Broadway and the Global Neo Traditional Country music movement. \n\n \nThis Kansas native\, has been at the forefront of what has come to be known as Americana Music for the better part of 25 years. Perhaps best known for co-founding the famed ‘90s Alternative Country quintet\, BR5-49\, whos 7 albums garnered a CMA Award for Best International Touring Act and three Grammy nominations\, helped build an indelible bridge between authentic American Roots music and millions of fans worldwide. \n\n \nSince then he’s toured the globe\, entertained thousands on the high seas\, released 4 solo albums\, made 137 appearances on the Grand Ole Opry\, co-produced critically acclaimed tribute albums to Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings\, acted as Musical Director/Supervisor/Producer of the Broadway hit musical Million Dollar Quartet AND the companion CMT television show Sun Records. \n\n \nWith a deep connection to Memphis and a burning desire to keep building musical bridges\, Chuck packed up the band and took time out of his crazy schedule last summer to record his fourth solo album with Matt Ross-Spang (Margo Price/John Prine/Jason Isbell/Al Green) at legendary Sam Phillips Recording Studios\, the result of which\, ‘Close To Home’\, was released June 21\, 2019 on Plowboy Records.  \n\nSince 2019 Chuck has also hosted a radio show on 650AM WSM Radio in Nashville called “Face the Music with Chuck Mead.” \n—- \nJason Ringenberg was born and raised on an Illinois hog farm that bordered the Rock Island Line Railroad. He left for Nashville on July 4\, 1981\, to pursue his dream of “making a band that could kick American roots music into the modern age!” Little did he know just how far the kick would travel. He immediately formed Jason and the Scorchers and never looked back. Throughout the 1980s and 90s they tore up venues across the planet and became known as one of the most exciting live bands in music. On classic LPs like Fervor and Lost and Found they “single-handedly rewrote the history of rock ‘n roll in the South” (Rolling Stone).   Their instinctive ability to combine traditional country music with high-energy punk rock has not been surpassed to this day. In 2008 they were awarded the Americana Music Association Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance. The band has an exhibit in the Country Music Hall of Fame.   \n\n\n\n\n\nBut Ringenberg’s story does not stop there. In 1992 the “Godfather of Americana” (Mojo) decided to go solo. He has released seven records\, with everyone from the BBC to USA TODAY lauding his songwriting. Touring the world relentlessly as a solo barnstormer\, The Times (UK) called him “one of the most exciting performers of his generation.”  In 2002 he created a children’s music character called Farmer Jason\, winning an Emmy Award for his PBS program.    \n \nIn 2017 the U.S. National Park Service invited him to be their Artist-in-Residence at Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park. He spent a month hiking the mountains and writing songs. That explosion of creativity yielded two career-defining records: Stand Tall in 2018 and now his newest release\, Rhinestoned.    \n\n \nSo don’t go to his concerts expecting to see a sensitive singer-songwriter sitting on a stool. With his acoustic guitar and high-energy charisma\, he WILL rock the house!

It’s sister event – MUSIC HEALS US VOLUME 2 – is 7-9:30pm on Saturday September 7th\, feat. special guests Mary Bue\, Venus DeMars\, and Larry Wish.\n—Each of these “MUSIC HEALS US” events provides a container within which recent Back to the City guests demonstrate / discuss the healing power of music. Guests are invited to participate in this  series following especially rich discussion of music and wellness with Simon on his show. \n— \nTwo of the musicians involved in this inaugural event – Annie Fitzgerald and Chance York – are wellness practitioners whose healing practices are informed by their ongoing music-writing and vice versa. When our third special guest\, Lady Midnight\, was composing her newest record “Pursuit & The Elusive\,” she simultaneously created a short (healing-focused) virtual reality film\, also titled “Pursuit & the Elusive.” That 15 minute virtual reality film will receive its twin cities debut at this event. \n—\nChance York (still also an active rapper) is now Owner of Connected Wellness LLC\, Co-Founder / Producer of Peace in Practice\, and host of award-winning PBS wellness show ‘Outside Chance.’ Chance is  a recurring guest on Back to the City; we conducted our first interview – concerning Crunchy Kids and his solo rap career – in 2016\, at which point Chance was eager to share how transformative his recent development of a yoga practice had been. Chance performed at the final Mortimers-based Back to the City Showcase on Jan 30\, 2020; ahead of that\, we conducted an interview centered around his 3-4 year transition from rapper – via rapper + yoga instructor – to “energy entrepreneur.” Chance will perform a rap set at MUSIC HEALS US 1\, preceded by an interactive movement workshop. \n—\nLady Midnight SHORT FILM twin cities premiere. Lady Midnight is an ethereal vocalist and performance artist who draws upon her multidisciplinary background in visual art\, dance and Afro-caribbean-indigenous roots to create work that timelessly reflects our collective lives. Join us for the Twin Cities premiere of “Pursuit & The Elusive”\, a short virtual reality film starring singer/songwriter Lady Midnight (@iamladymidnight)\, where she will be joined by directed Laura Robards (@lrcoolg) and cinematographer Brian Skalak (@secondsightvisuals) for a brief talk – curated by Back to the City host Simon Calder – after the screening.\n— \nAnnie Fitzgerald is an established Singer-Songwriter\, Sound Healer\, Reiki Practitioner\, Transformational Astrology Guide\, and co-owner of Under the Moon Creative LLC. Her music has been described as “a blend of Tori Amos’ intellectual appeal\, Sarah McLachlan’s mystical charm and Edie Brickell’s baroque spirit” (Jamsphere). Her songs have been featured numerous times as Song of the Day on the Current\, and her 2023 single release “Anam Cara” was on the ballot for the Currents’ Top 89 Songs of 2023. Annie facilitates Group Sound Journey sessions at the Hewing Hotel\, the Yoga Center Retreat\, St. Mark’s Cathedral\, Honest Yoga\, and other spaces around the Twin Cities metro area. Annie will open MUSIC HEALS US 1 with a Sound Journey\, then conduct a brief on-stage interview with Simon before performing acoustically.

Limited reserved seats available to see this world class collection of artists perform live! ——————-MARK JOSEPHAmerican Soul is a fitting brand for Mark Joseph; since his 2017 album by that title\, he has charted a relentless and soulful course through America\, and Americana\, from blues to country to psychedelic rock and everything in between.  On his newest offering\, “Palisade Peach\,” Joseph’s fourth full-length album\, he continues this journey\, from his soul\, straight to your heart. It is a “blues” album in the truest sense of the word\, with familiar 12 bar strains that echo the march of American music from the rural southern US up the Mississippi\, to cities like Minneapolis and Chicago where it found a wider urban audience; it is the blues that has given rise to “rhythm and blues\,” to “soul” and to “rock and roll.” You find it all on “Palisade Peach.”\n——————-MUTLUWith his silk-like vocals\, Mutlu gently showers over melodies like rain. A Philadelphia native and first-generation American of Turkish decent\, Mutlu combines his innate Philly-soul style with elements of folk\, reggae and rock. This cohesive blend of music creates a rare and retro sound that is entirely timeless. Mutlu has already made substantial headway with his high-caliber soulful sound. He’s collaborated and toured extensively as a support act with legendary duo Daryl Hall & John Oates. He even holds the distinction of having made the most guest appearances on Daryl Hall’s acclaimed\, award-winning TV show “Live From Daryl’s House”. Mutlu has toured as a support act and longtime collaborator with noted singer/songwriter Amos Lee\, and has shared stages with the likes of Adele\, Katy Perry\, John Hiatt\, Leon Russell\, the Blind Boys of Alabama\, Todd Rundgren\, Shuggie Otis & many more. Additionally\, he was the support act on the North American leg of Joe Jackson’s acclaimed “Rain” tour. Mutlu has rocked stages across Europe and America\, including: Greek Theatre (Los Angeles\, CA)\, Ascend Amphitheater (Nashville\, TN)\, Tower Theatre (Philadelphia\, PA)\, Royal Festival Hall (London\, UK)\, to name a few.\n \n“Truth and love is well worth the struggle\, It won’t come easy but it’s worth some good trouble” – “Lifeline\, Mutlu\n——————-SUPERIOR SIREN (solo)\nS U P E R I O R  S I R E N  is an eerie folk project inspired by Lake Superior and Siren mythology. The haunting music offers an alluring and dangerous expression of vulnerability and desire. Superior Siren was created by singer-songwriter Laura Sellner. She debuted her captivating voice and heartfelt lyrics in 2014 with the solo EP ‘Lotus in the Muck’. In 2016 Sellner joined forces with cellist Rachel Gobin\, bassist Nyssa Krause\, and drummer Emma Deaner to craft a mesmerizing blend of vocals\, strings\, and percussion. The all-female band became a sisterhood of sirens\, producing the 2018 LP ‘Superior Siren‘ followed by a tour of the Midwest. Another ethereal solo album titled ‘Kill Your Darlings’ was released in 2021 spotlighted by the Love Poem single and music video. Superior Siren enchants audiences as a solo or full band act; performing with DeVotchKa\, Low\, Trampled by Turtles\, Charlie Parr\, HALEY\, and Bon Iver as well as collaborating with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. Superior Siren will release new eerie folk music in 2024.

When Taxi’s career was cut short by the tragic passing of their drummer\, singer Ntenda\, lead guitarist Lorenzo and bassist (then drummer) Danilo regrouped as Giuda. The lineup is completed by guitarist Sergio\, adding a second layer of boogie sparks to the mix\, and new drummer Alex\, who replaced Daniele.—Fuelled by the sounds of bands like Slade\, Glitter Band\, Hector\, Third World War and Slaughter & The Dogs\, Giuda offer fresh\, powerful rock and roll with attitude in spades.—Their debut album “Racey Roller”\, famously described by Robin Wills (The Barracudas) as\, “Cock Sparrer twinned with the Equals”\, was graced with iconic cover art courtesy of French designer and glam fanatic—Tony CrazeeKid\, and quickly became an underground sensation. Highly praised by publications as diverse as Mojo\, The Guardian\, Uncut\, Rolling Stone\, Vice (album of the year) and Maximum Rock’n’Roll\, the album remains a true cult classic and an inspiration to the numerous hordes of bovver rockers currently following in Giuda’s wake.—From their debut album release up until the present day\, the band has completed several European tours and five USA/North American tours\, playing around 400 gigs in total\, including triumphant appearances at many major festivals such as Rebellion (Blackpool\, UK)\, PunkRock Bowling (Las Vegas\, USA) and Hell Fest (France). \n\n“Racey Roller caused me to piss my pants laughing because it was so brilliant\, so exhilarating and fun.” – Joe Elliot (Def Leppard)\n“They carry the very essence of guitar rock into the 21st century.” – Alex Petridis\, The Guardian\n“This is irresistible stuff.” – 9/10 Classic Rock\n“Italy’s glammed-up boot boys do it again.” – 9/10 Vive Le Rock\n“Delivered with a ‘70s Saturday grin\, the aural equivalent of pale ale\, home-knitted football scarves and a pub fight.” – 4/5 Shindig\n“Subtle as a platform shoe in the teeth.” – Daily Express\n“Their performance transported me back to the heady days of watching punk groups play in the back rooms of dodgy London pubs in 1977.″ – Phil King (Lush\, Jesus And Mary Chain)\n“This is the most fun I’ve had watching a live band since The Fleshtones in their prime. This is no single-minded retro trip\, but pure energy\, loud\, tight and concise.”- Robin Wills (The Barracudas\, Purepop)

He’s touring in celebration of his new release “Human Decency”. \n \nSugaray Rayford is a man with a message\, a larger than life personality\, and voice to deliver it. Working with producer\, songwriter Eric Corne for the past 3 albums\, the soul-blues powerhouse has crafted an incendiary sound and narrative\, combining classic soul melodies and funky R & B grooves with raw blues power.\n \nThe pair’s first collaboration\, Somebody Save Me\, earned Rayford a 2020 Grammy nomination. Later that year he took home Blues Music Awards for ‘Soul Blues Male Artist‘ and ‘B.B. King Entertainer of the Year‘. Rayford’s follow up In Too Deep won a plethora of awards including the Blues Music Award for ‘Soul Blues Album of the Year’.\n \nRayford’s new release is entitled ‘Human Decency’. The title track is a simple reminder that our similarities are stronger than our differences and in the end\, there is no black or white or left or right\, there are only hearts and minds.\n \nAbout the leadoff single\, “Run For Cover” a song that takes no prisoners\, Q Magazine declares\, “The bluesey soul of Rayford comes on full steam with this powerhouse single.”\n \nAn all-star cast lent their talents to the album\, including guitarist Rick Holmstrom and singer Saundra Williams who are both from Mavis Staples’ band\, along with bassist Taras Prodaniuk (Lucinda Williams\, Merle Haggard).\n \nAt his core\, Sugaray Rayford is a unifying force. His live shows are a party\, which was evident during his electrifying performance at the 2022 Non-Commvention. Some conversations may be had\, and some self-reflection may occur\, but at the end of the day people leave feeling a sense of joy and togetherness. \n\n

Reserve your seats now. \nJohn Németh was the recipient of the 2024 Blues Music Award for Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year. He has received Blues Music Awards for Soul Blues Male Artist\, Soul Blues Album\, Traditional Blues Album of the Year\, Instrumentalist – Vocals and Instrumentalist – Harmonica. Recording eleven albums since 2002\, Nemeth is known for his uncanny ability to skillfully blend retro and modern blues and soul into compelling music that is simultaneously old and new. \nAs a teenager in the early ‘90s growing up in the muddy potato fields of Idaho\, John Németh was drawn to the hard-edged hip hop sounds and rock bands of the day\, until a friend introduced him to the Junior Wells and Buddy Guyclassic “Hoodoo Man Blues.” Together they formed Fat John & the 3 Slims\, which is still regarded as a legendary band in the Boise region. John relocated to San Francisco in 2004\, where he had the bitter-sweet good fortune to undertake a two-year stint with Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets\, filling in for the ailing Sam Myers. \nJohn’s talents did not go unnoticed and he soon signed a recording contract with Blind Pig Records. His national debut for that label\, “Magic Touch” (2007)\, produced by Anson Funderburgh and featuring Junior Watson on guitar\, received an ecstatic response from fans and the media\, and he was hailed as the new voice of the blues. Living Blues enthused\, “Magic Touch gives hope that the blues will survive.” \nIn 2008 Németh was recruited by Elvin Bishop to do some performances and contribute four vocal tracks to his Grammy-nominated album “The Blues Rolls On.”In 2013 John relocated to Memphis\, Tennessee\, where he teamed up with classic Memphis Soul band\, the Bo-Keys\, to create an album of revisited soul classics. In 2017 Németh released “Feelin’ Freaky” (produced by Luther Dickinson) on his own Memphis Grease label\, crushing all barriers of style and genre with an album of original songs that defied all the usual pigeonholes\, drawing from his strong influences in blues and R&B\, as well as contemporary sounds in hip hop and rock ‘n’ roll. \n“One of the best vocalists working today\, John Németh has received a multitude of nominations for Blues Blast and Blues Music Awards\, with four consecutive BMA nominations for the B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year Award. His live shows highlight his dynamic stage presence\, super-tight band\, and a wealth of original songs that range from down-home blues to fervent ballads.” – Blues Blast Magazine———————-Grounded in blues and jazz yet pushing the boundaries of rock\, The Claudettes are writing the most riveting chapter of their story now. With six albums on Forty Below Records and Yellow Dog Records\, the Claudettes have earned international acclaim for their piano-powered “garage cabaret” sound featuring Rachel Williams (vocals)\, Johnny Iguana (piano\, vocals\, songwriting)\, Zach Verdoorn (bass\, guitar\, vocals) and Michael Caskey (drums). \nWhile The Claudettes sound can be described as blues\, rock\, roots\, jazz and even punk\, when asked what words he would use to describe their sound\, Iguana offers “garage cabaret\,” a distinct term that conjures up the perfect image to describe the Claudettes visually and sonically. \nOutside the Claudettes\, Johnny Iguana has earned Blues Music Award and Living Blues Award nominations\, toured with Junior Wells and Otis Rush\, played on three Grammy-nominated releases\, and recorded with Buddy Guy\, Junior Wells\, Derek Trucks\, Mick Jagger\, Keith Richards and more.Johnny Iguana is also composer of the score for the Emmy-winning\, smash-hit FX/Hulu series “The Bear.” \n“Chicago’s original recipe band…The Claudettes’ sonic playing field is the blues and everything after\, all tastefully and artfully blended together….Perhaps the band’s greatest super power: songwriting.”—NPR Music \n“A skewed cabaret band of blues\, jazz and rockabilly…a sensibility that feels equal parts James Deanand David Lynch.”—Minneapolis Star-Tribune

After 10 years we celebrate a new album from Jason Streitz. If the weather is nice we can open up the garage door and hang inside and under the stars! \nJ Streitz and the Long Odds \nWhile playing bass in several Minneapolis bands spanning over two decades\, Jason Streitz quietly wrote country\, bluegrass and folk songs in his spare time. These songs\, along with a handful of new tunes would become the foundation for The Long Odds. Operating now as J Streitz and the Long Odds\, the band has completed their second full length album. Light Again was recorded at Zoo School Studio in St Croix Falls\, WI and is set for release in August of ‘24. \nJ Streitz and the Long Odds have shared the stage with a wide range of national and regional acts including Sarah Shook and the Disarmers\, Nathan Kalish\, Invisible Boy\, Kind Country\, Gabe Barnett and Them Rounders\, Bruise Violet\, Jay Lenz (Pert Near Sandstone) at prominent midwest venues such as The Parkway Theater\, Turf Club\, Icehouse\, Lee’s Liquor Lounge\, The Cabooze\, Como Dockside Pavilion\, The Aster Café and Brickyard Pottery. \n““Traces of early Uncle Tupelo and Jayhawks trickle into this fiddle-spiked Twin Cities alt-twang quintet’s promising debut album “Level Ground”\, recorded at Pachyderm Studio with a guest spot by Yonder Mountain’s Allie Kral” \n— Chris Riemenschneider – STAR TRIBUNE—————The Union SuitesThe Union Suits are an original midwestern Americana band from Minneapolis\, MN via rural Wisconsin. Stepping in to fill the shoes of regional country heroes Redwing Blackbird after their guitarist Buddy got rung up on a three-month bid in Ramsey County\, Union Suits are a hot-shooting country-rockin’ outfit with songs that are pretty enough to make ya cry into your Lone Star.—————Eli GardinerEli Gardiner is a songwriter from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan\, currently located in Minneapolis Minnesota. He writes music that can be described as Americana\, Heartland Rock\, and Folk. Coming of the 2020 release of his album\, The Fire and The Medicine\, he formed his full band comprised of drummer Greg Schutte (Mickey Hart\, Ryan Bingham) lap steel/electric guitarist Dan Schwartz\, keyboardist Kevin Gamble and bassist Nick Salisbury (Ryan Bingham\, Brian Fallon). Eli’s music is always changing\, morphing to the mood and groove. It can be described as Americana or Rock\, but the themes are deeply rooted in our lives in present day\, what it means to be a human and to be sympathetic to other people. It’s about our connection\, how we are all the same and crave that understanding that music can bring at its most transcendental times.
