Intricate but free-swinging\, explosive yet intimate\, fresh and green as grass. Taking cues from the dance bands of western Louisiana (and his native Midwest)\, the streets (and 45’s) of New Orleans\, touring African and Caribbean combos and the soul\, funk & blues of his youth coupled with early\, teeth-cutting experience in the verbal hotbeds of the coffeehouse scene\, Paul Cebar is a masterful synthesist of rhythmic culture.\n \n \n\n—–\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!

Wisconsin singer-songwriter Derek Pritzl opens.\n \nErik Koskinen is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist\, whose music is not categorized by sub-genres. Stylistically he is on his own. Influenced by roots music of the Americas and the world\, the rhythmic integrity and musical tone are as important as the lyrical content and the artistic intent. \nSprouted from a blend of American folk\, country\, rock-n-roll\, and blues\, Erik Koskinen  and his top-shelf band realize a sound that is distinctive and fresh while familiar and classic. Koskinen’s albums are a lyrical and musical metaphor of America’s theaters of war\, history\, relationships\, and reflections in the mirror. “Burning The Deal” was produced by Koskinen and Bernie Larsen(Melissa Etheridge\, Jackson Browne) and recorded by Jason Mariani (Mumford & Sons\, Kenny Loggins) at Brotheryn Studios in Ojai\, California. \n\n Knowing but not didactic\, Koskinen channels the ways of Whitman and reverently enters the anthology of uniquely crafted wry songs with the likes of Woody Guthrie and Ry Cooder while speaking as plainly as your neighbor. The Minneapolis Star Tribune calls Koskinen “the real deal” and “the best country songwriter in Minnesota.”\n \n\n \n\nDerek Pritzl is a Wisconsin singer/songwriter born and raised in the fertile farmland of Valders\, Wisconsin. He brings a style and narrative that is reminiscent of some of the great songwriters of yesterday and today\, continuing a tradition of songwriting developed by artists such as John Prine\, Guy Clark\, and John Fogerty. His songs evoke visions of the struggles of the working man\, the road-weary traveler\, and of love found and love lost. Regardless of the size of venue\, his music and songs create an atmosphere of intimacy\, reflection\, and fellowship that brings the audience into his world.\n“….Pritzl serves up a round of gritty\, road-tested songs about working-class life and whiskey-soaked love.” – Adventures in Americans\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n—–\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!

The rising guitar and lap steel player calls his original music “electric swamp funkin’ blues\,” defined by raw and soulful musicianship played with fire-and-brimstone fervor. His gritty\, unvarnished vocals draw his audience deep inside his unforgettable tales of love\, passion\, pain and pleasure. No other band on the current blues scene is built quite like Birchwood’s. \n \nLiving Blues says\, “Selwyn Birchwood is a master storyteller—both lyrically and musically. He’s an impressive\, hard-crunching\, modern blues guitarist. His fretwork is high-energy\, raw and vivid…knife-edged leads and roadhouse-rattling grooves. He is graced with a depth and maturity that would be impressive in a grizzled veteran\, let alone a fresh-faced young man.” \n “A remarkable contemporary bluesman….a powerhouse young guitarist and soulful vocalist. A major player….highly recommended!” Rolling Stone\n \n“Rising blues star Selwyn Birchwood is the real deal.  Birchwood puts his own fresh spin on the blues\, taking the tradition and making it into something new.”  Guitar World\n \n\n \n\nWe’re excited to announce the addition of Joe Roberto & Poverty Hash to the event.  This marks the return of Joe to the stage after a long\, hard fought battle with a rare genetic disease. \n \nConnecticut transplant Roberto (vocals\, harmonica\, lap steel\, guitar\, keyboards) is a captivating front man who brings a catalog of over 350 songs for the band to draw from. His band G’nu Fuz spent extended time on the H.O.R.D.E. tour with Blues Traveler. \n \nAt a time when America seems to be tired of trendy\, come and go musical trends and craving a good recipe for its musical leftovers\, Poverty Hash is simmering its brand of Indie-Americana-Blues-Roots and waiting for you to lift the lid. \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n—–The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!\n

Rock Your Ride is a chill\, fun way to support our work and connect with folks who care about our climate and our communities. We pinky promise to bring the rock and get you pumped to walk\, ride\, and roll around this summer! Join us on Wednesday\, June 28 for Hook & Ladder’s ‘Under the Canopy’ event featuring live outdoor music from local bands Gully Boys and WHY NOT. \n———— \nGully Boys origin story plays out like the perfect domino effect. While sorting vintage clothes in a Minneapolis-area Ragstock in 2016\, Kathy Callahan (she/her) shared her dream of becoming a vocalist with Nadirah McGill (they/them). After encouraging a friend from middle school\, Natalie Klemond (she/her)\, to join the trio on bass\, Nadi picked up a pair of drumsticks and counted off a cover of Best Coast’s “Girlfriend.” From there\, they had to master their instruments on the fly\, growing as creatives while blossoming with their first material. After their debut EP landed online a year later\, Gully Boys released their debut LP Not So Brave in 2018\, earning Best New Band honors from their hometown City Pages and sharing the stage with everyone from The Hold Steady to Third Eye Blind. The band’s Phony EP arrived in late 2019 on the edge of a screeching halt. In December 2021\, Mariah Mercedes joined the band. The band has just released their new single “See You See” ahead of their next album. \nWHY NOT is the Minneapolis trio’s self-titled mission statement. Henry Breen\, Isaac Dell\, and Joshua MacGregor met playing in a middle school music class at Great River School in St. Paul\, MN. The trio formed WHY NOT in early 2016 as Breen and MacGregor enrolled in high school at nearby St Paul Conservatory of Performing Artists while Dell continued at Great River. Before any band member could drive\, they had released their first album and booked their first tour—relying on Isaac’s dad\, Irve\, for transportation to their shows. The band enlisted Minneapolis producer and brother of MacGregor\, Caleb Hinz (Hippo Campus\, Samia\, Miloe)\, to produce WHY NOT\, booking their first session at Flowers studio in Minneapolis at the end of summer 2020. The result is a virtuosic\, genre-fluid statement from a young band just beginning to harness the heights of their craft. \n\n=======The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!\n
