With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe.\n \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation\, and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band Davina and The Vagabonds in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA\, which she now describes as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” She was adopted by her much older stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed away when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says.\n \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player where she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath\, and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom.\n \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school\, which morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail\, and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band\, and worked [her] ass off every day since.”\n \nDavina and the Vagabonds shine every time they play. To date\, they’ve performed in forty-five states\, twelve European countries\, and two Canadian provinces. For one\, Teleport 004 will feature ambient and downtempo music. I have long thought that a showcase of psybient and psy chillout music would be very worthwhile. There is so much variety within this heading and so much good music that only people in psytrance world seem to know about. The music programming has departed slightly from this initial picture\, all in good ways. The entire evening will feature live performance. The artists—Kitten Candy\, Squig\, and Ancient Fruit—are all dedicated\, multitalented\, experimental artists who will bring a variety and progression that is ideal for this emerging concept. \nThe event will be in Zen Arcade at the Hook and Ladder Theater\, which is also new for Teleport. The arrangement and deco plan are being worked out (as I am still pretty unfamiliar with that space)\, as is the visual programming by Kid Cuisine (who created the beautifully tailored flyer image for this unique installment). She is a vocalist of many genres\, but specializes in singing traditional Lakota and indigenous music. She travels throughout North America to powwows as a backup singer for drum groups as well as performing solo for various audiences. Her vocal range reveals the pride of her identity as a Lakota woman. \n— \nDeanna StandingCloud is a mom\, playwright\, organizer\, artist\, community leader\, pow-wow emcee\, and advocate for Indigenous people. A member of the Red Lake Nation\, an Anishinaabe or Ojibwe tribe\, StandingCloud’s role as an emcee is just one aspect of a life that intertwines both tradition and modernity. She found her calling in weaving words and telling stories\, unlike the rest of her family who are more gifted in the visual arts. She studies Ojibwe\, the Anishinaabe language\, writes plays for New Native Theatre in St. Paul\, and performs as a stand-up comedian. As a leader and connector within her community\, she uses humor and storytelling to share her culture and break Native stereotypes. She hopes to pass down a love of her culture to her children\, while also leaving a legacy of a powerful Anishinaabe woman.—Trish Cook is a Red Laker with deep roots in South Minneapolis. She has been entertaining audiences for years with her humor and expressive storytelling. Relocating to MN a year after finally becoming a bonafide musician\, he hit the ground running in and outside of Minneapolis and Saint Paul releasing underground albums and mixtapes in the 2000s\, also doing these releases online during that time as an digital early adopter-before the advent of iTunes and the streaming era (and social media). This made for a near seamless transition into officially releasing music commercially\, his first of that type of offering being his classic 2009 album Truth or Consequences. A gripping\, personal tome with a more musical soundbed\, that album became his magnum opus. In more recent years he’s released a couple of love letter projects to his region\, the ambitious CENTRAL STANDARD TIME album in early 2020\, which includes the powerful single “Changes” (feat. Jay Jeminii)\, which was considered for the Recording Academy’s first ever GRAMMY®️BEST SONG FOR SOCIAL CHANGE songwriters honor. And the critically and culturally acclaimed Midwest Mayor special music project in late 2021\, which was produced entirely by his Southwest PA music partner LUKE-O.  A memorable live performer\, some venues and performances the 2x Hollywood Independent Music Award and Twin Cities Hip-Hop Award Nominee has had the pleasure of performing at are Penn State University\, Peavey Plaza\, the Fine Line Music Café\, the Big Turn and FOR THE LOVE music festivals\, and the Midwest Basketball League’s Halftime Show. Visually ushering in this recent era of his career\, he’s compiled his self-described “modern music video collection” of four celebrated Vevo certified videos from the CENTRAL STANDARD TIME and Midwest Mayor projects on Vevo/YouTube\, which total over 13.5K views to date. Some of the popular songs in his catalog include the smashes “Polo Suit” and “Joliet” (feat. Cariah Brinaé\, the aforementioned “Changes” (feat. Jay Jeminii)\, the hard-hitting “Perspective”\, and “Nu & U” (feat. Jay Jeminii). As a music executive he’s successfully mentored and produced a few acts. Hailing from Austin by way of Denton\, the Texas Power Punk 5 piece are almost an institution. Their fiery garage punk has spanned nearly two decades and has spread the world over. People from countries worldwide\, aliens from universe-wide\, spirit entities from dimensions unknown\, would all come to whatever dirty dive club The Gamblers were playing to watch the band collectively impale themselves on the sharpened stake of Rock and Roll. Raucous and unpredictable live shows have become the stuff of legend as injury and blood took center stage\, sometimes overshadowing the absolute brilliance of the songs themselves. With iron clad bubble gum pop\, emotionally and philosophically informed by trucker speed and free clinic waiting rooms\, Riverboat Gamblers have the rare ability to combine a Cheap Trick-ian love of hooks\, gang vocals that would make a good skinhead weep\, and a pathos and self-lacerating wit that\, if one was able to look beyond the band literally kicking the holes in a venue ceiling\, was on par with any more congratulated “smart” band.\nBut God is fickle.  The Gamblers didn’t die as advertised. Everybody wanted them to be the Johnny Thunders Party Bus or whatever cliche narrative was most desired deep in the fair-weather fan’s heart. But the Gamblers\, a bunch of Misfit toys formed in the Denton house show scene\, recognize no master or silly pit boss. When they were expected to stay fast\, they slowed down\, got real odd and sad. Hailing from Los Angeles\, this four-piece channels the spirit of rebellion through blistering riffs and Mimi’s visceral screams\, delivering biting commentary on capitalism\, misogyny\, and the constructs that seek to confine us. With influences like Rudimentary Peni\, Crass\, and Hole\, Niis fuses rage and reflection into songs that confront and provoke\, like “Fuck You Boy\,” an unflinching anthem about navigating a male-dominated music scene\, or the searing “Tyrant\,” which demands liberation from oppressive systems.\n\n\n \n\n\nOn March 28\, Niis will release their highly anticipated new album\, Niis World\, via Get Better Records. The album embodies their ethos of defiance and empowerment\, with tracks like “Low Life” exploring themes of betrayal and resilience\, and “Spite” rejecting societal archetypes with lines like\, “No longer will I exist in spite of you.” The band’s relentless energy and sharp lyricism shine through\, cementing their place as one of punk’s most vital voices.\n\n\n \n\n\nSince their 2020 debut EP Not Niis and their 2022 follow-up Must Be…\, Niis has shared stages with acts like Devo\, Scowl\, Gel\, Bleached\, Sheer Mag\, and Ceremony\, and performed at festivals like SXSW and Punk in the Park alongside legends such as Pennywise and Circle Jerks. Yet no matter how far they push their sound\, Niis remains deeply rooted in punk’s core ethos of community and connection. \n\n\n \n\n\nWith Niis World\, the band is set to remind us that true punk is about breaking chains\, speaking truth\, and\, above all\, being “nice like Niis.”\n\n\n—\n\n\nPollyanna\, a four piece New Jersey band consisting of power-pop\, loud rock\, bubble grunge and punk influences consists of lead singer and guitarist Jill Beckett\, drummer Daniel McCool\, bassist Brandon Bolton\, and guitarist Jack Rose. Their name directly derives from the dictionary definition\, “to be unreasonably or illogically optimistic” – perfectly describing front-person Jill Becket’s ‘stuck in 2017’ incredibly optimistic attitude. After meeting in the first grade\, Dan and Jill started the band at just 13 years old\, eager to create and play music that would reach audiences beyond the confines of Jill’s open garage doors. Brandon made them a trio in early 2019\, bringing 90’s femme punk influence to the group. At the start of 2021\, Jack completed the bands’ lineup\, adding his elemental stabby guitars and love for shoegaze and metal into the mix. After completing almost 5 tours around the east coast and the midwest\, Pollyanna has won over a following in the New Jersey music scene along with cities in the tri-state and beyond. With a satisfyingly raw 80’s garage punk sound\, Surly Grrly uses catchy hooks and tempo changes to rile up a crowd\, mixing originals with a variety of bombastic covers.
