SUMMARY:KFAI’s 46th Anniversary Community Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n \n\n EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook AND LADDER THEATER \n\nDoors 6:30pm\nMusic 7:00pm\n18+\nFREE with Registration\n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n\nKFAI’s 46th Anniversary Community Celebration\nw/ L.A. Buckner and BiG HOMiE\, shrimp olympics\, & America y Los Sentimientos\n  \nOur friends at KFAI Community Radio (90.3FM) turn 46 this year and we’re helping them celebrate by throwing a free party. The station went on the air in 1978 with studios located in Walker Church and has been the voice of the community ever since.\nKFAI has curated an entertaining evening of music and fun for their birthday bash. The entire concert is being audio and video recorded. Simply sign up for your free tickets.\nL.A. Buckner is a performing musician\, teaching artist\, and producer from the Northside of Minneapolis. He holds a master’s degree in Percussion Performance from McNally Smith College of Music. Currently\, LA serves as co-host for the two-time Webby award-winning PBS music education YouTube series Sound Field.  In August 2020\, LA took iTunes by storm with the release of his project BiG HOMiE\, which reached the #1 Jazz position within 24 hours of its release. \nGet ready to experience a historic blend of jazz\, Gospel\, hip hop and avant-funk. Buckner’s compositions soar and sway\, blurring the line between Sunday church service and face-melting jam sessions. His artistry is full of energy\, excitement\, and culture.\n \nShrimp Olympics is the home recording project of Austin Lombardo. On stage\, he is backed by a four-piece live band. The music of Shrimp Olympics follows in the tradition of home-taping heroes like R Stevie Moore and Ween\, with heavy jazz\, country\, and psychedelic pop elements. This is easily one of the tightest bands in the Twin Cities today. \n \nAmerica y Los Sentimientos is a collective of musical storytellers weaving tales of passion\, joy\, and the universal human experience. Their bilingual repertoire spans the spectrum of pop\, rock\, and cumbia. With a wide range of musical and cultural influences from members from Mexico\, El Salvador\, Wisconsin\, and Texas\, they create an energetic fusion that leaves an indelible mark on the ears and hearts of their listeners.

This rockin’ quartet is considered one of the torch bearers of American roots music.\n \nSince forming in 1988 in Southern California\, Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys have become one of the world’s most beloved Americana/Roots acts\, drawing from the deep musical waters that flow just beneath the surface of Rock & Roll’s fertile soil. A childhood passion for Country\, Doo-Wop\, and Rhythm & Blues 45s led Sandy (born Robert Williams) to pursue a singing career as a teenager\, beginning a life in music that continues decades later. \n \nAnd as his personal record collection continues to grow (75\,000 and counting)\, so does the depth of the musical influences that stream through his songwriting and singing style. A critically acclaimed tribute to Tex-Mex hero Freddy Fender\, released at the beginning of the 2020 lockdown\, points the way forward for Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys as they continue on a path of musical growth. After nearly 35 years on the road\, and more than two dozen releases to their credit\, they remain key figures on the ever-changing Americana circuit\, both on record and in live appearances.\n \n \n\nKinda Fonda Wanda is a high-octane\, rock ‘n’ roll\, honky-tonk experience inspired by the “Queen of Rockabilly” Wanda Jackson. The band features Amanda White\, a vocal powerhouse and compelling band leader. Minneapolis Star-Tribune said: “Amanda White has a voice that is glorious and a heart full of passion for Wanda Jackson. And\, Alan Subola is beyond words on guitar.”\n \nPrior to the outdoor music event\, Miss Shannon of “Miss Shannon’s Sock Hop” will be giving free swing dance lessons to get you ready for Big Sandy!\n

Formed when stepsisters Kelli Mayo and Peyton Bighorse were just 9 and 13\, the Oklahoma-bred band have channeled their chameleonic musicality into a sound they call “ugly-pop”\, unruly and subversive and wildly melodic. With Kelli’s brother Kurtis Mayo joining on drums in 2017\, they’ve also built a close-knit community of fans while earning the admiration of their musical forebears\, a feat that’s found them collaborating with icons like X’s Exene Cervenka and Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson\, touring with Babes In Toyland\, and starring as the subject of a feature-length documentary. On their double album Chaos County Line\, Skating Polly reach a whole new level of self-possession\, ultimately sharing their most expansive and emotionally powerful work to date. The follow-up to 2018’s The Make It All Show\, Chaos County Line finds Skating Polly working again with Brad Wood\, the acclaimed producer behind indie-rock classics like Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville. As their songs journey from art-punk to noise-rock to piano-driven power-pop\, the band matches that musical complexity with a sharply honed narrative voice that manifests in countless forms (ultravivid poetry\, diary-like confession\, fearlessly detailed storytelling\, etc.). Not only the outcome of their constant growth as songwriters\, Chaos County Line’s scope and depth has much to do with Skating Polly’s newly heightened clarity of vision.\n—-\nLord Friday the 13th is a dollar store trash-glam-punk band based in Austin\, TX. Fronted by siblings Felix (vocals) and Sloane (guitar) Lenz\, their sound has been described as the Velvet Underground meets the New York Dolls\, with hints of early Iggy and the Stooges. While honoring the origins of punk and the energy it birthed with it\, Lord Friday continues the legacy of change and pushing boundaries on societal norms that true punk is known for. Challenging gender roles and conformity\, Lord Friday is here to empower and inspire a new kind of punk for a new world.

This co-bill presents 3 sets of music taking us past the outdoor curfew and into the night… just the way they like to do it in the Crescent City. We will open up the evening Under The Canopy with an intimate solo performance from John Papa Gros\, followed by the Caribbean combos\, soul\, funk & blues of Paul Cebar and Tomorrow Sound (Milwaukee). Then we close the night indoors with a John Papa Gros’ full band performance for that funky Big Easy dance party! \n6pm – Doors7pm – John ‘Papa’ Gros (Solo) – Under The Canopy8pm – Paul Cebar and Tomorrow Sound – Under The Canopy9:30pm – John ‘Papa’ Gros (Full Band) – Inside Theater \n—\nNew Orleans has its fair share of musical ambassadors\, but few are more rooted in the cracked sidewalks and popping speakers of the Crescent City than John “Papa” Gros. Born and raised in the city\, Gros melds funk\, rock\, jazz\, and blues to deliver a sound that is both innovative and unmistakably New Orleans. \n \n\nIn keeping with the energy and spirit the Big Easy is known for\, Gros is a consummate live performer. His infectious band shows have been the highlight of festivals and venues across the U.S. and Europe\, showcasing versatile musicianship\, relentless grooves\, and eclectic songcraft of the highest order. Drawing on the full breadth and depth of his extensive catalog\, Gros’ live performance marries style with substance\, bringing that unique\, can’t-put-your-finger-on-it magic of New Orleans and infusing the audience with a joyous energy few artists can match. \n\n“John “Papa” Gros is a bedrock New Orleans artist\, a keyboardist\, singer and songwriter who draws on funk\, rhythm & blues and Americana songcraft; he also knows his way around the Mardi Gras music repertoire about as well as anyone.” – Keith Spera The New Orleans Advocate\n——————– \nPaul Cebar Tomorrow Sound bring forth a funky\, lyrically charged performance that sits comfortably with soulful sounds the world over. Intricate but free-swinging\, explosive yet intimate\, fresh and green as grass. Taking cues from the dance bands of western Louisiana (and his native Midwest)\, the streets (and 45’s) of New Orleans\, touring African and Caribbean combos and the soul\, funk & blues of his youth coupled with early\, teeth-cutting experience in the verbal hotbeds of  the coffeehouse scene\, Paul Cebar is a masterful synthesist of rhythmic culture. \n“I’ve been a fan of Paul’s for a long time. He and his band play great funky\, original music\, drawing from a wide range of styles I love. We love touring with them and his radio show is awesome.” -BONNIE RAITT

This showcase celebrates mothers from diverse backgrounds\, including single moms\, married moms\, lesbian moms\, BIPOC moms\, and those raising young adults\, tweens\, and young children. \n\n“We are thrilled to present ‘Mama Hellcats’ at the The Hook & Ladder Theater and to showcase the incredible talent of these remarkable musicians who are mothers\,” said The Hook & Ladder Theatre. “Through the power of music\, we aim to highlight the strength and resilience of mothers in the industry.”\n \nIn addition to the captivating performances\, the event will also feature information booths and representatives from local organizations dedicated to providing support and resources for survivors of domestic violence. Join us for an unforgettable night of music\, unity\, and empowerment as we come together to raise awareness for domestic violence resources.\n \nAbout the Artists: ANNIE ENNEKINGAnnie Enneking (of Annie and the Bang Bang)\, is a lover and a fighter. She writes unflinchingly vivid and nuanced songs about being a person in a world full of complicated people. She finds camaraderie\, passion\, collaboration\, and joy playing music with Annie and the Bang Bang. Together\, they create little drive-in movies you can dance to. Their latest release is a double album\, RADIO BABY. With songs inspired by the 1970s and filtered through their alt rock lens\, you can feel free to think Fleetwood Mac meets Nirvana or Heart meets R.E.M. Annie\, along with firefighter / author husband\, Jeremy Norton\, is the parent of two young women\, who recently launched boldly into the world. She treasures the GarageBand recordings she made with her kids when they were little. Those improvised songs are both hilarious and a testament to the creativity in the Norton-Enneking household.\n \n\nSAMANTHA GRIMESSamantha Grimes is a left-handed-upside down guitar player that pens catchy and thought provoking songs in a confessional style. Without adhering to one set style or genre\, Samantha just weaves lyrical stories. She has been nominated for Josie Music Awards in the category of “Rising Star” in both 2022 and 2023. She has also been nominated for multiple ISSA Awards including Songwriter of the Year and Entertainer of the Year – and won in 2023 for Entertainer of the year! \nKASHIMANAKashimana is a mother\, musician\, vocalist\, composer\, producer and teaching artist with a rich soulful blues voice that soars through their original compositions. The name Kashimana means ‘that’s their heart’ and you can hear Kashimana’s heart beating in the compelling sound of their music which is an exploration of Soul\, R&B\, Folk\, Afro-funk and more. Kashimana often draws from their Nigerian heritage and experiences growing up in Nigeria and Kenya and living in the United States. \nNIKKI LEMIRENikki Lemire spins her life around her music\, making space to perform in multiple fields and genres. Her songwriting features her expressive vocals over layered and hypnotic accompaniment. She dives deep into moving themes surrounding motherhood\, love and loss. Nikki artfully shapes the music to her words\, creating a sound that refuses to adhere to any one particular genre\, somehow feeling old and new at the same time. \nHALEY E RYDELL Haley E Rydell is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist originally from Fargo\, ND whose memorable melodies and honest lyrics have been making their way across the country. Although best known for her top-notch fiddle playing and her Christine McVie-esque harmonies\, the Minneapolis-based artist has been quietly making a name for herself as a first-rate songwriter. Now\, with the release of her solo album “Midwestern Daughter\,” she shows why her work has been called “Absolutely gorgeous\, like Patty Griffin sitting in with The Weepies” (Denver Westword). \nKATY TESSMANWith a voice full of the wisdom she’s gained through breast cancer survival\, heartbreak\, and motherhood\, Katy Tessman is an optimistic and approachable songwriter who celebrates life’s stumbles and summits. Soaring to new heights with her eagerly awaited album\, “Fly” marks her return to the stage after a twenty-year hiatus while she raised her two sons. Hailing from Minneapolis\, Katy is also an award-winning children’s book author\, celebrated as a CHANGEMAKER by Minnesota Women’s Press.—\nKaty Tessman and the Turnbuckles: 7:30 – 8 (main stage) \nKashimana trio: 8:05-8:35 (lounge stage) \nAnnie and the Bang Bang: 8:40-9:10 (main) \nNikki Lemire duo: 9:15 – 9:45 (lounge) \nSamantha Grimes Band: 9:50-10:20 (main) \nHaley E Rydel solo 10:25-10:55 (lounge)

Never content to allow himself to be confined to any particular category\, he embarked on a solo career that’s yielded many critically-acclaimed albums and consist kudos for his exceptional instrumental prowess\, his searing vocals\, and live performances that have dazzled audiences from coast to coast.  \n\n \nIt’s little wonder that Miami’s New Times lauded him as South Florida’s “Best Blues Guitarist” or that USA Today was inspired to remark “It’s a revelation to discover the thrilling retro-electric blues from this astonishing young guitarist.” M Music & Musicians once noted\, “His back-to-basics approach follows in the footsteps of those who fostered the blues in the Mississippi Delta and the smoky late-night haunts of Chicago.”  \n\n \n“It may be a bit premature to crown Albert Castiglia America’s newest King of the Blues\, but there’s little doubt that he at least deserves the title of heir apparent.”— Miami New Times\n \nIf the last few years are any indication\, that comment from the Miami New Times is certainly the case. In 2020\, he won a Blues Music Award “Blues Album of the Year” – in 2023\, he won both “Blues Rock Artist of the Year” and “Blues Rock Album of the Year.” \nCastiglia has never allowed himself to be confined to a musical genre and AllMusic said his style“combines hardcore blues with soul\, rock\, and country flavors for a sound that will appeal to rockers and purists alike.”\n \n \n\nMato Nanji\, longtime front man of Native American band Indigenous\, improves his craft with each record. His playing and singing have never been better as he pushes himself to new personal bests.  The group’s music is motivated not only by blues and rock greats such as Jimi Hendrix\, Carlos Santana\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, and B.B. King\, but also by the social issues and cultural bonds of the Mato’s Nakota roots.   \n\n \nThey have won Native American Music Awards for “Blues Recordings of the Year” as well as “Artists of the Year”honors. Indigenous’ sophomore release\, Circle\, was produced and arranged by Stevie Ray Vaughan’s longtime friend and collaborator\, the late Doyle Bramhall\, Sr. \n \nBorn and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota\, front man Mato dedicates his latest release Time Is Coming to the indigenous youth and all young people on the indigenous reservations.\n \nIn addition to his Indigenous ‘day job’\, Mato Nanji has been a member of the critically acclaimed Experience Hendrix Tour since 2002.  Playing alongside original Jimi Hendrix band members Billy Cox and the late Mitch Mitchell\, the tour roster includes some of today’s blues greats including Jonny Lang\, Kenny Wayne Shepherd\, Eric Johnson\, Dweezil Zappa\, Doyle Bramhall II\, and Robert Randolph. \n \nMato and fellow EHT tour mates  David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars)collaborated on the hard-driving\, psychedelic blues-infused 3 Skulls and the Truth disc.  The album’s no-holds barred setting is the ideal foundation for the three veteran axemen to simply ‘let it fly’.\n

Year three of the festival celebrates Chicago. Listeners and dancers\, you’ll get to hear the music of King Oliver\, one of the founding fathers of jazz who gave his young protege Louis Armstrong his first big break. Jimmie Noone\, the astounding clarinetist who set the bar oh-so-high with his small band at The Nest. And finally\, Harlem Hamfats\, who kept the party going in the ‘30s\, backing up iconic R&B singer Rosetta Howard. Welcome all you dancers in town for Midwest Lindy Fest! We’ll see you on the dance floor.\n \n \nFor twenty years the Southside Aces have performed the music of Jazz Age greats such as Louis Armstrong\, Duke Ellington\, and Fats Waller\, to name a few. They’ve played for clubs\, dancers\, and festivals in the Twin Cities and throughout the midwest\, including the 50th Anniversary Bix Beiderbecke Jazz Festival in the summer of 2021. They’ve released eight albums of jazz including their newest\, Minneapolis Bump\, featuring all originals in the traditional style.\n \n \nMiss Myra and The Moonshiners are a formidable 5-piece swing band from Minneapolis\, MN with a fresh sound grounded in early jazz and blues. Playing original music amid a broad repertoire of classics from the ‘20s and ‘30s\, they have developed a singular style that delights audiences and dance halls with the spirit of a musical tradition at its centennial. The group has made appearances at Bayfront Blues Festival\, Fargo Blues Fest\, Sioux Falls Jazz Festival\, among others.\n \nHigh Noone is a new band dedicated to the music of clarinetist Jimmie Noone. It’ll be like stepping into The Nest Club at 35th and Calumet in late 1920s Chicago\, where Noone led his hot jazz quintet\, unusual for having no brass. Alto saxophonist Brad Holden joins clarinetist Tony Balluff in the front line\, while pianist Ted Godout takes on the role of Earl Hines\, and bassist Josh Granowski and drummer Dave Michael round out the rhythm.
