As noted by The Current\, LeBlanc’s music is “so delicate\, understated\, and careful in its construction that you forget it’s taking apart how to live in such an unstable world while giving solace and a place for rest.” Luke’s music has received critical acclaim from numerous music magazines\, including Bluegrass Situation\, Americana Highways\, and Glide Magazine\, and he has shared the stage with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\, Charlie Parr\, and Grammy-Nominee Amythyst Kiah. His newest record\, Places\, was produced by Erik Koskinen and is his debut album for Real Phonic Records.\n \n\nWeeping Covenant\nBased in St. Paul\, MN\, The Weeping Covenant is headed by vocalist and songwriter\, Michael Beatrez. Writing from a lyrically driven perspective\, he generally touches on themes of hope\, vulnerability\, and love. Beatrez leans into his comfortable sweet spot by singing over soft fingerstyle guitar ballads and rock songs that drive with measured intensity. \n\n\n \n The music of The Weeping Covenant is rooted in Americana\, with pop sensibilities akin to Jeremy Messersmith\, piercing storytelling of Jason Isbell\, and spacious\, sustained vocals that melt into reverb like the ballads of John Denver.\n

In addition to the usual fatback rhythms\, you may hear some undercurrents of outlaw country\, disco\, and grungy rock. Hiahli is also known to throw in a few deep covers from the archives of hip-hop.

After 10 years we celebrate a new album from Jason Streitz. If the weather is nice we can open up the garage door and hang inside and under the stars! \nJ Streitz and the Long Odds \nWhile playing bass in several Minneapolis bands spanning over two decades\, Jason Streitz quietly wrote country\, bluegrass and folk songs in his spare time. These songs\, along with a handful of new tunes would become the foundation for The Long Odds. Operating now as J Streitz and the Long Odds\, the band has completed their second full length album. Light Again was recorded at Zoo School Studio in St Croix Falls\, WI and is set for release in August of ‘24. \nJ Streitz and the Long Odds have shared the stage with a wide range of national and regional acts including Sarah Shook and the Disarmers\, Nathan Kalish\, Invisible Boy\, Kind Country\, Gabe Barnett and Them Rounders\, Bruise Violet\, Jay Lenz (Pert Near Sandstone) at prominent midwest venues such as The Parkway Theater\, Turf Club\, Icehouse\, Lee’s Liquor Lounge\, The Cabooze\, Como Dockside Pavilion\, The Aster Café and Brickyard Pottery. \n““Traces of early Uncle Tupelo and Jayhawks trickle into this fiddle-spiked Twin Cities alt-twang quintet’s promising debut album “Level Ground”\, recorded at Pachyderm Studio with a guest spot by Yonder Mountain’s Allie Kral” \n— Chris Riemenschneider – STAR TRIBUNE—————The Union SuitesThe Union Suits are an original midwestern Americana band from Minneapolis\, MN via rural Wisconsin. Stepping in to fill the shoes of regional country heroes Redwing Blackbird after their guitarist Buddy got rung up on a three-month bid in Ramsey County\, Union Suits are a hot-shooting country-rockin’ outfit with songs that are pretty enough to make ya cry into your Lone Star.—————Eli GardinerEli Gardiner is a songwriter from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan\, currently located in Minneapolis Minnesota. He writes music that can be described as Americana\, Heartland Rock\, and Folk. Coming of the 2020 release of his album\, The Fire and The Medicine\, he formed his full band comprised of drummer Greg Schutte (Mickey Hart\, Ryan Bingham) lap steel/electric guitarist Dan Schwartz\, keyboardist Kevin Gamble and bassist Nick Salisbury (Ryan Bingham\, Brian Fallon). Eli’s music is always changing\, morphing to the mood and groove. It can be described as Americana or Rock\, but the themes are deeply rooted in our lives in present day\, what it means to be a human and to be sympathetic to other people. It’s about our connection\, how we are all the same and crave that understanding that music can bring at its most transcendental times.

SUMMARY:Hamell On Trial with special guest: Ruth Theodore
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n RSVP ON FACEBOOK\n \n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook and Ladder Theater \n\nDoors 7:30pm :: Music 8:00pm \n21+\nGA*: $15 Advance / $20 Day of Show\n \n\n\n*Does not include feesNO REFUNDS \n\n COVID-19 Policies\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nHamell On Trial\nwith special guest: Ruth Theodore\n  \nHamell On Trial returns to the Hook & Ladder along with special guest Ruth Theodore. Hamell on Trial is the musical alias of New York-based folk punk hero Ed Hamell. A one-man explosion\, he is loud-as-war one minute\, stepping off the microphone to whisper to an enthralled audience the next. This is a dynamic performance informed by politics\, passion\, intelligence and the all-important sense of humor. \nHis caustic wit and devil-may-care attitude have long been a favorite of anti-establishment icons Aesop Rock\, Kimya Dawson\, Ani DiFranco\, and the critical elite inciting Rolling Stone magazine to call him “Bald\, bold\, and superbad!” Henry Rollins says “Hamell is a one-man rock show!” He has been described as “Bill Hicks\, Hunter S. Thompson\, and Joe Strummer all rolled into one” by Philadelphia Weekly and a “one-man Tarantino flick: loud\, vicious\, luridly hilarious\, gleefully and deeply offensive” by the Village Voice. \n“He plays a 1937 Gibson guitar with a jackhammer force that makes you wonder how it doesn’t fall apart. The powerful\, profane\, hilarious\, one-man wrecking crew known as Hamell On Trial.” – Brian Cornish \nHamell tours the world constantly\, seemingly enjoying every performance challenge. From larger stages and theaters\, winning the coveted Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival\, to house concerts and DIY underground spaces\, this is a man who clearly loves to play. Armed with a battered 1937 Gibson acoustic guitar that he amplifies mightily and strums like a machine gun\, a politically astute mind that can’t stop moving\, and a mouth that can be profane one minute and profound the next\, with Tackle Box\, Hamell sets his sights on the new America and issues personal and spiritual. His performances invoke thoughts of the great\, rebellious satirists and social commentators of the past: Lenny Bruce\, Richard Pryor and Bill Hicks. Hamell is a great mind with acoustic punk rock mixed with a seeker’s soul. There’s no way around his obscenity but in that is a willingness to fight for the free thinkers of the world. Don’t we need that now more than ever? \nRuth Theodore has just signed an exciting record deal with Ani Difranco’s Righteous Babe Records in the USA and is on her debut tour of the US this spring to celebrate the release of her highly anticipated 5th studio record – ‘I Am I Am’ \nShe’ll perform from the new album which is the fruits of her ongoing collaborations with Grammy and Tony award winning bassist/producer Todd Sickafoose (Hadestown) and Swiss American percussion virtuoso Mathias Kunzli (Regina Spektor)\, recorded in upstate New York by Eli Crews (Tune-Yards). \nTheodore will also perform tracks from her critically acclaimed back catalog\, archived in the British Library for its contribution to British music. Theodore is an enigmatic performer and has performed her music in iconic venues in the UK including the London Palladium and Glastonbury Festival. \n“The last time I played the London Palladium Ruth Theodore was on the bill with me. I watched from the wings inspired by her authenticity\, her connection with my audience\, and her free artistic spirit. That night I saw her as a true Righteous Babe. Last fall\, when she reached out with her new album\, it seemed the perfect time to reunite and help introduce her to North America.”— Ani DiFranco“Britain’s answer to Ani DiFranco”- Red Guitar Music \n“Her tales leave you breathless” ★★★★ Mojo

He was always amazed at how a comedian could hold so many people’s attention. Now based in Minneapolis\, he is an open book who talks about life experiences ranging from drugs to family. He unapologetically says what he thinks. His unique and hilarious stories earned him a semifinalist finish at The Funniest Person with a Day Job Contest at Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy\, and had his own wildly popular monthly showcase which he hosted and curates “Laughs and Legends” at Lakes and Legends Brewery in downtown Minneapolis. He is currently a paid regular emcee at the hottest comedy club in Minnesota Acme Comedy Company.\n\n\nEll-Emaj Hill\, an up & coming Minneapolis based stand up. Debbie Center is known for her signature #classicalrock grooves\, reworking classic rock tunes into symphonies for two hands on her piano. Some of her favorites are the Grateful Dead\, Beatles\, Jethro Tull\, Led Zeppelin\, Queen\, Moody Blues\, Stevie Wonder\, Elton John\, Billy Joel\, and many more. She performs with numerous other musicians throughout Minnesota in addition to her solo piano concerts. Debbie also composes original piano music inspired by the wildlife\, scenery\, and northern lights of her beloved home in Nevis\, Minnesota. \n“Debbie Center is one of my favorite musicians to work with. She always has such amazing energy and it shines wildly through her music. Classical piano roots to improvisation of the highest accord. It’s very rare to find both qualities in a musician and usually it’s one or the other\, Debbie does both with ease. Her kind and positive attitude paired with her musical ability also continues to elevate her into new musical heights\, I’m excited to see where her musical journey will lead! I’m a big fan.”  – Mark Joseph (The Big Wu / The Dire Wolves)

Missy Raines has proven herself without doubt as an iconic bluegrass instrumentalist. But with the success of her latest release\, Royal Traveller\, Raines has stepped into the spotlight as a songwriter and singer as well. Royal Traveller was nominated for a GRAMMY® in 2020 and was produced by Compass Records co-founder and renowned banjoist\, Alison Brown. \n \nCurrently\, Missy is touring with her own band\, Missy Raines & Allegheny\, a bluegrass ensemble featuring banjo\, fiddle\, mandolin\, guitar\, and bass. With more than a nod to her deep bluegrass roots\, Allegheny offers Missy fertile ground to bring a together a lifetime of traditional inspiration along with her unique approach to string band music. \n \nAn experienced teacher\, Missy has been teaching bass at workshops and music camps all over the world since 1998 and also heads the ArtistsWorks Academy of Bluegrass School of Bluegrass Bass\, an online learning platform that features its’ trademarked Video Exchange technology.\n \nIn 1998\, Raines became the first woman to win IBMA’s Bass Player of the Year award. Her album\, Royal Traveller\, highlights this particular piece of Raines’ history with the stand out track “Swept Away”\, which features the first 5 women to win IBMA instrumentalist awards – Raines\, Brown\, Sierra Hull\, Becky Buller\, and Molly Tuttle. “Swept Away” was named 2018 IBMA Recorded Event of the Year.\nMissy’s version of the iconic Flatt & Scruggs “Darlin Pal(s) of Mine”\, (from the same album)\, was named 2019 Instrumental Recording of the Year by the IBMA. The tune features Alison Brown on banjo\, Todd Phillips on bass and Mike Bub on bass. \n \nIn 2020\, Missy received the IBMA Song of the Year award along with co-writers\, Becky Buller and Alison Brown for “Chicago Barn Dance”\, a song written specifically for the Chicago-based band\, Special Consensus. \n—\n\nThe Lake Monsters are friends from many bluegrass and other acoustic music bands in the area that got together for a house gig in the summer of 2023. At the end of the summer they were having so much fun they decided to keep it going. “The idea is simple\, straight ahead classic bluegrass – songs we all know and play together when we’re just jamming and doing it just for the fun of it.” It is more the rule than the exception that at any time\, any number of the best players from the top bluegrass acts in the area either sub in or make a guest appearance. In that respect it is more of a “collective” of bluegrass musicians. \n \nJohn Bodle – is a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist and bluegrass historian. He has played in numerous Twin Cities area bands including Ivory Bridge\, The Mark Kreitzer Band\, and LaPlant Road. \n \nBrent Fuqua – is originally from Kansas City and is a lifelong practitioner and student of Americana\, Folk and Bluegrass. He has been working as a mandolin player in the Minneapolis area for the last 10 years. Among the acts has worked with are Mother Banjo\, Blue Groove\, The Tony Rook Band\, Mashtun\, The Fisheads\, and Derek Johnson & Hardgrass. \n\n \nMarty Marrone – is originally from the Chicago area and toured for years as a member of national bluegrass band Special Consensus. Since moving to Minneapolis he had his own band Tangled Roots\, and spent years as the lead singer and guitarist in The High 48’s. He also plays in The Pale Ales Bluegrass Band. \n \nRina Rossi is a stalwart in the Old Time Music and square dance scene in the area. She and her husband AJ Srubas have a popular band Steam Machine and formerly were founding members of Back Up & Push.\n \n\nTom Schaefer is ubiquitous. If there’s a fiddle needed in any situation it’s likely him. Some of Tom’s more recent acts are Honky Tonk Jump\, Mashtun\, The Mark Kreitzer Band. He also appears with many national acts that come through town.

On her new album\, Not Over This Yet\, Mahal is ready to confront the past with brutal honesty and tender consideration. The ten tracks play out like thumbing through a photo album\, some snapshots burnt at the edges\, blurry and overexposed\, others are intricately framed\, capturing first impressions of what has grown into a golden-light love. Her latest singles have earned her placements on both Apple Music and Amazon playlists\, and the album has garnered attention from the likes of Under The Radar and Consequence of Sound\, who wrote\, “it feels as though she’s stepped into some of her own power.” \n\n \nPoolboy is an indie rock band from Minneapolis. They formed in 2015 and released their self-produced EP in February of 2016\, which Andrea Swenson of The Current called\, “An impressive debut.” In 2017\, they were named City Pages’ Best New Band.\nTheir newest five song EP\, Good Orchard\, was released in 2021 and represents a course change for the group that explores themes of existential fatigue\, intimacy\, and personal growth through dynamic lyricism placed within a vibrant and melodic soundscape.\nGood Orchard was engineered\, produced\, and mixed by Con Davison (Wingman\, Bad Bad Hats) and mastered by Huntley Miller (Bon Iver\, Sylvan Esso). \n\n

Minneapolis comedian\, writer\, and advocate Sarah McPeck opens the show. 10% of proceeds go to Outfront MN. AND there will be a post show chat with local leaders and representatives. Don’t miss it! \n\n \nIn a time where transgender people are being targeted and further marginalized by expansive overreach of local\, state and national politicians\, Dina Nina brings hope and joy with with the return of “Born Loud” a comedic storytelling of Dina Nina’s life and journey to finding self love. The show is full of humorous anecdotes\, childhood\, and the numerous coming out periods of her journey. Dina Nina Martinez\, the transgender stand-up comedian and actor praised by James Corden\, wows with her blend of sass and charm. She’s been featured in top comedy festivals and venues like LA Pride\, The Comedy Store\, and Zanies Comedy Club. A Huff Post blogger\, she founded Lady Laughs Comedy & Artemis Bow Productions and penned “The Misadventures of Delilah James.” She was honored to be one of “58 Trans Women Actors You Should Know & Also Love\,” by Autostraddle and she earned the title of Madison’s favorite Local Comedian. Podcast”\, “The D Word Podcast” and the acclaimed “Dina & Gregg Show.” Dina Nina is also the first transgender woman to be elected to Madison\, WI City Council. Dina Nina Martinez is a comedic powerhouse\, spreading laughter and love worldwide. \n\n \n\nGrowing up in rural Wisconsin during the week and Minneapolis on the weekend\, allowed Sarah the perspective that people lived life very differently from one another. This city mouse\, country mouse existence provided a unique lens for commentary and it brought out the natural storyteller in Sarah. A ten-year stint as a blackjack dealer gave Sarah a captive audience to hone her comedy chops. One day she looked at the smoke-filled walls and noisy slot machines and said goodbye. She turned in her apron and decided to bet on herself and become a comedian.  At the same time\, she decided to pursue this dream she also decided to pursue her dream of being a lesbian. Go for broke\, as they say. Sarah is also an advocate for LGBTQ rights\, produces many shows to further queer content and to bring inclusion to the media.
