Since 2010 she has shared her gift with the world through posting song covers online\, and performing live onstage at open mics and shows in the Minneapolis area. Now a solidified recording artist\, she connects with listeners and takes them on a passionate journey through her musical love tales & stories\, with her memorable brand of retro meeting the alt-R&B of the times.  \nCariah Brinaé has made quite the splash in the true indie music world from the moment she started releasing music. Her first ever 2019 promotional single “Last Time”\, immediately became a hit with grassroots listeners. The Audiomack streaming platform tapped it to trend on their site\, and to date it has amassed over 6\,000 organic\, unique streams worldwide.  \nWith this beginning to her music career\, audiences flocked closer to the Minneapolis singer / songwriter\, whose mezzo-soprano vocals provide a soulful invitation to the ear. Her next single\, “The Space”\, was released commercially in 2019\, and it firmly placed her arrival as one of the future acts in R&B; as it permeated through the underground & made its way to music fans of all kinds. As it grew\, the smash single was featured throughout indie media\, and as it made its rounds Cariah became a press darling. Cariah has been highlighted on music and culture blogs DOPECAUSEWESAID\, MNStandup\, Lizzie Brodie\, and broke2dope\, to name a few. “The Space” has now surpassed 10\,000 organic\, unique streams worldwide.  \nSummer 2020 brought on an active release schedule\, with singles “One & Only” (with Zay Starr) and “Sunday”\, with “Sunday” also being featured by the R&B Hype music blog\, and is approaching the 10\,000 worldwide streams mark. Cariah also featured on the “Make Love” single from Twiss Smith Productions during that time.   \nAt the top of 2021 a positive shift took place when she released the acclaimed acoustic performance version of “The Space” via her YouTube channel\, becoming the next signature song in her catalog. More people took notice in the culture\, and she gained yet even more praise and whispers from\, and around\, successful and well known entertainment & music industry folk. She sat down for a breakthrough interview with media personality Lisa Moy\, and headlined her first ever concert in Minneapolis-her 70’s themed birthday bash in May 2021\, full circle to a packed crowd at the historic Red Sea venue where she got her start in music.  \nShe featured on both Vence Julez’s “Sneaky Link” and TWAIN’s “Joliet” throughout 2021 also. She ended that year inking a new distribution deal with the invite-only platform Sparta Distribution\, powered by Warner Music Group’s 300 Entertainment. Her first Sparta release was the 2021 holiday single “Be My Christmas Love”. A remastered version of “The Space – Acoustic” was released next on January 25\, 2022 to celebrate its one year anniversary. In August\, she was announced as a recipient of the American Composers Forum’s 2022 Minnesota Music Creator Award\, on the heels of releasing her seductive single “Freak Me” (feat. BenSap Grimm).  Later that month\, she headlined for the 2nd time ever in her hometown at her An Evening With Cariah Brinaé concert at the James Ballentine “Uptown” VFW.  \nNotable airplay for her music includes Dash Radio\, the Purple Current\, which is the 24 hour stream from Minnesota Public Radio’s The Current 89.3 celebrating Prince’s musical universe of songs\, inspirations\, peers – which they call the “Purple Family Tree”\, and her personal hometown favorite 89.9 KMOJ FM. Also\, Cariah was handpicked for Bree Noble’s award winning Women of Substance Music Podcast\, which features “the best new music by Female Indie Artists”- a highly visible platform celebrating female indie talent since 2007.  \n\n\n

Coming together from across the Midwest\, Trevor (vox\, guitar)\, Griffin (lead guitar)\, Martin (drums)\, Christian (bass\, backup vox)\, Casey (backup vox)\, and Staurie (keys\, backup vox)\, have dedicated their music careers to helping create a safe space\, which is showcased in their first full-length album\, Mental Space.\n \n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n\nSleeping Jesus is the dream pop project started by Nick Elstad in the small river town of Winona\, MN. The now five piece project\, featuring Tyler Steinley\, Andy Bauer\, Seamus St Clair\, and Dante DeGrazia\, is set to release their debut album\, Leave the Party Early\, on July 25; made with friend and producer Mike Noyce. The band began to find their musical voice creating this album\, splitting time during the pandemic between Winona\, Minneapolis\, Milwaukee\, and Nick’s wife’s family farm in Northfield\, Minnesota. Leaving comfortable approaches behind\, Mike helped the group tread into new sonic territory. Melancholy thoughts about leaving your twenties behind and feeling out of place are accompanied with swirling pop landscapes throughout the nine track\, 30 minute listen. This is truly the first brave step of this young band.\n \nhttps://youtu.be/GSbLgOKygJE \n\nBeemer  is an amalgamation of 5 prolific\, young Twin Cities musicians\, in the name of creating tasteful\, tongue-in-cheek\, timid rock. Formed and fronted by Hank Donato (formerly of John Chuck & the Class)\, the band includes local friends and prolific backing musicians Luke Enyeart (formerly of Chastity Brown)\, Cooper Doten (Greycoats)\, Reese Kling (The Orange Goodness) and Caleb Anderson (Aldrich). Their debut album “Jaws” is set to release in early 2023. \n—–The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!

Led by their charismatic front man\, Col. JD Wilkes\, the band continues to wow crowds with their explosive interpretations of swamp blues\, rock n’ roll and hillbilly music\, making fans\, critics\, and now\, an entire new generation into true believers. \nDex Romweber is best known as one-half of the seminal two-piece Flat Duo Jets. He fronted the Dex Romweber Duo with his older sister Sara Romweber. Romweber digs deep into rockabilly\, blues\, jazz\, punk\, country\, and any raw roots style he runs across. \nViva Le Vox bubbled up out of the South Florida muck in 2008\, playing a peculiar blend of punk rock\, ragtime\, and blues.\n\n \n\n

DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nunder the canopy at The Hook and Ladder Theater \n\nDoors 6:00pm\nMusic 7:00pm\n21+\nReserved Seats: $35\nGA: $20 ADV / $25 DOS\n\n*Does not include feesNO REFUNDS \nThank you to our supporting partners:Jack Daniels\, Summit Brewing\, Slane Irish Whiskey\, KFAI – Fresh Air Community Radio\, Mpls / St Paul Magazine\, Nobool Presents\, Arbeiter Brewing\, Moon Palace Books\, The Hub Bike Co-Op\, The Hive Realty\, Lake Street Council\, & The MN State Arts Board \n\n COVID-19 Policies\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n\nRoots Rock & Deep Blues & MN Blues Society Presents\nIndigenous / The Steepwater Band\n \n\nUnder the Canopy will be rockin’ as Native American blues-rock group Indigenous (featuring Mato Nanji) and Chicago rockers The Steepwater Band team up for an electric night.\n \nMato Nanji\, longtime front man of Native American band Indigenous\, improves his craft with each record. His playing and singing have never been better as he pushes himself to new personal bests. The group’s music is motivated not only by blues and rock greats such as Jimi Hendrix\, Carlos Santana\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, and B.B. King\, but also by the social issues and cultural bonds of the Mato’s Nakota roots.\n\nThey have won Native American Music Awards for “Blues Recordings of the Year” as well as “Artists of the Year” honors. Indigenous’ sophomore release\, Circle\, was produced and arranged by Stevie Ray Vaughan’s longtime friend and collaborator\, the late Doyle Bramhall\, Sr. \nBorn and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota\, front man Mato dedicates his latest release Time Is Coming to the indigenous youth and all young people on the indigenous reservations. \nIn addition to his Indigenous ‘day job’\, Mato Nanji has been a member of the critically acclaimed Experience Hendrix Tour since 2002. Playing alongside original Jimi Hendrix band members Billy Cox and the late Mitch Mitchell\, the tour roster includes some of today’s blues greats including Buddy Guy\, Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon (Double Trouble)\, Jonny Lang\, Kenny Wayne Shepherd\, Eric Johnson\, and Robert Randolph. \nMato and fellow EHT tour mates David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) collaborated on the hard-driving\, psychedelic blues-infused 3 Skulls and the Truth disc. The album’s no-holds barred setting is the ideal foundation for the three veteran axemen to simply ‘let it fly’. \n\n \n\n \n\nIf the old saying about talent equaling success were true\, then The Steepwater Band would already be a household name\, rubbing shoulders with other like-minded travelers in our collective Rock ‘n Roll Fantasy. \nThis band leans into it\, smiling\, with everything in them\, not for brass rings and marquees\, but because they must! For them\, the music lifestyle is a calling and not some stupid costume one puts on to shake loose gold\, fame\, and groupies. In a land of caricatures\, it’s striking to come face-to-face with the real thing. And\, The Steepwater Band is the real thing! \n“Not only do these longhairs know their Johnny Winter and their Johnnie Walker\, they sure as shootin’ dish it out in a nuclear hoedown of dirty fuzztone lead and slide guitar riffs.” Creem Magazine \n \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n—–\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!

Back for 2023! \nMainstays of the Minneapolis music scene since 2008\, Farewell Milwaukee embraces the role that their Midwestern towns have played in shaping them artistically\, garnering them fans through their authentic lyrics\, lush vocal harmonies\, and an honest sincerity at live shows. It is because of this\, they have gathered accolades from local and national press\, landed a song placement on major-network TV\, opened for the Lumineers (among others)\, and are featured on compilations alongside Mumford & Sons\, Adele and Amos Lee. \nTwo Harbors have released Four full-length albums of impressively cranked-up guitar-driven rock anthems. Originally joining forces in 2007 as Colonial Vipers Attack (which sounds like a would-be metal band)\, the members of Two Harbors played in groups you might have seen in the Let It Be bins\, including Faux Jean and Divorcee.   \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n—–\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!

Rock Your Ride is a chill\, fun way to support our work and connect with folks who care about our climate and our communities. We pinky promise to bring the rock and get you pumped to walk\, ride\, and roll around this summer! Join us on Wednesday\, June 28 for Hook & Ladder’s ‘Under the Canopy’ event featuring live outdoor music from local bands Gully Boys and WHY NOT. \n———— \nGully Boys origin story plays out like the perfect domino effect. While sorting vintage clothes in a Minneapolis-area Ragstock in 2016\, Kathy Callahan (she/her) shared her dream of becoming a vocalist with Nadirah McGill (they/them). After encouraging a friend from middle school\, Natalie Klemond (she/her)\, to join the trio on bass\, Nadi picked up a pair of drumsticks and counted off a cover of Best Coast’s “Girlfriend.” From there\, they had to master their instruments on the fly\, growing as creatives while blossoming with their first material. After their debut EP landed online a year later\, Gully Boys released their debut LP Not So Brave in 2018\, earning Best New Band honors from their hometown City Pages and sharing the stage with everyone from The Hold Steady to Third Eye Blind. The band’s Phony EP arrived in late 2019 on the edge of a screeching halt. In December 2021\, Mariah Mercedes joined the band. The band has just released their new single “See You See” ahead of their next album. \nWHY NOT is the Minneapolis trio’s self-titled mission statement. Henry Breen\, Isaac Dell\, and Joshua MacGregor met playing in a middle school music class at Great River School in St. Paul\, MN. The trio formed WHY NOT in early 2016 as Breen and MacGregor enrolled in high school at nearby St Paul Conservatory of Performing Artists while Dell continued at Great River. Before any band member could drive\, they had released their first album and booked their first tour—relying on Isaac’s dad\, Irve\, for transportation to their shows. The band enlisted Minneapolis producer and brother of MacGregor\, Caleb Hinz (Hippo Campus\, Samia\, Miloe)\, to produce WHY NOT\, booking their first session at Flowers studio in Minneapolis at the end of summer 2020. The result is a virtuosic\, genre-fluid statement from a young band just beginning to harness the heights of their craft. \n\n=======The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!\n

The rising guitar and lap steel player calls his original music “electric swamp funkin’ blues\,” defined by raw and soulful musicianship played with fire-and-brimstone fervor. His gritty\, unvarnished vocals draw his audience deep inside his unforgettable tales of love\, passion\, pain and pleasure. No other band on the current blues scene is built quite like Birchwood’s. \n \nLiving Blues says\, “Selwyn Birchwood is a master storyteller—both lyrically and musically. He’s an impressive\, hard-crunching\, modern blues guitarist. His fretwork is high-energy\, raw and vivid…knife-edged leads and roadhouse-rattling grooves. He is graced with a depth and maturity that would be impressive in a grizzled veteran\, let alone a fresh-faced young man.” \n “A remarkable contemporary bluesman….a powerhouse young guitarist and soulful vocalist. A major player….highly recommended!” Rolling Stone\n \n“Rising blues star Selwyn Birchwood is the real deal.  Birchwood puts his own fresh spin on the blues\, taking the tradition and making it into something new.”  Guitar World\n \n\n \n\nWe’re excited to announce the addition of Joe Roberto & Poverty Hash to the event.  This marks the return of Joe to the stage after a long\, hard fought battle with a rare genetic disease. \n \nConnecticut transplant Roberto (vocals\, harmonica\, lap steel\, guitar\, keyboards) is a captivating front man who brings a catalog of over 350 songs for the band to draw from. His band G’nu Fuz spent extended time on the H.O.R.D.E. tour with Blues Traveler. \n \nAt a time when America seems to be tired of trendy\, come and go musical trends and craving a good recipe for its musical leftovers\, Poverty Hash is simmering its brand of Indie-Americana-Blues-Roots and waiting for you to lift the lid. \n	\n \n\n	\n	\n—–The Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!\n

Wisconsin singer-songwriter Derek Pritzl opens.\n \nErik Koskinen is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist\, whose music is not categorized by sub-genres. Stylistically he is on his own. Influenced by roots music of the Americas and the world\, the rhythmic integrity and musical tone are as important as the lyrical content and the artistic intent. \nSprouted from a blend of American folk\, country\, rock-n-roll\, and blues\, Erik Koskinen  and his top-shelf band realize a sound that is distinctive and fresh while familiar and classic. Koskinen’s albums are a lyrical and musical metaphor of America’s theaters of war\, history\, relationships\, and reflections in the mirror. “Burning The Deal” was produced by Koskinen and Bernie Larsen(Melissa Etheridge\, Jackson Browne) and recorded by Jason Mariani (Mumford & Sons\, Kenny Loggins) at Brotheryn Studios in Ojai\, California. \n\n Knowing but not didactic\, Koskinen channels the ways of Whitman and reverently enters the anthology of uniquely crafted wry songs with the likes of Woody Guthrie and Ry Cooder while speaking as plainly as your neighbor. The Minneapolis Star Tribune calls Koskinen “the real deal” and “the best country songwriter in Minnesota.”\n \n\n \n\nDerek Pritzl is a Wisconsin singer/songwriter born and raised in the fertile farmland of Valders\, Wisconsin. He brings a style and narrative that is reminiscent of some of the great songwriters of yesterday and today\, continuing a tradition of songwriting developed by artists such as John Prine\, Guy Clark\, and John Fogerty. His songs evoke visions of the struggles of the working man\, the road-weary traveler\, and of love found and love lost. Regardless of the size of venue\, his music and songs create an atmosphere of intimacy\, reflection\, and fellowship that brings the audience into his world.\n“….Pritzl serves up a round of gritty\, road-tested songs about working-class life and whiskey-soaked love.” – Adventures in Americans\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n—–\nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2023. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by StarTribune readers.—–The Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2023 season for our guests.Come hungry and enjoy dinner with the show!
