SUMMARY:Martha Wainwright "20th Anniversary Tour"
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n RSVP ON FACEBOOK\n \n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook and Ladder Theater \n\nDoors 6:30pm :: Music 7:00pm :: 21+\n\nReserved Seats: $34 ADV (Box-Office) \n\n\nGA: $24 ADV (Box-Office) \n\n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nMartha Wainwright\n“20th Anniversary Tour”\nwith guest Brad Barr \n—– \n\n\nThe Hook & Ladder is please to present acclaimed artist  Martha Wainwrightin concert.  To celebrate the 20th anniversary of her seminal eponymous debut studio album\, Martha Wainwright announces the 20th Anniversary Tour. \n \n2005’s ‘Martha Wainwright’ showed an artist of considerable depth and vision and secured herself a place as one of the finest songwriters of her generation. \nWith an undeniable voice and an arsenal of powerful songs\, Martha Wainwright is a beguiling performer and a refreshingly different force in music. \nBorn in Montreal to parents Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle\, both successful singers and songwriters\, Martha Wainwright was immersed in music from birth. Singing or performing on-stage and in the studio at an early age\, she became disenchanted at the thought of a musical career during high school. Shunning music\, she decided to study drama at Montreal’s Concordia University instead.\n \n\nSoon after starting her studies\, however\, she began composing her own material and performing in clubs and coffeehouses around Montreal. She also began touring with her older brother\, Rufus Wainwright\, as a backing vocalist and musician. Moving from Montreal to New York\, Martha was cast in a stage musical called Largo.  She also released a self-titled EP\, as well as a four-song EP. In February 2005\, Wainwright issued another EP called Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole (said to be inspired by her sometimes rocky relationship with her dad)\, followed by the self-titled Martha Wainwright\, her full-length debut album. \nMartha Wainwright’s role as an artist has always been to embrace her wildness and sketch out her raw depth. This edge is what makes Wainwright uncompromisingly herself and continues to draw in an audience two decades on. \n \nOver a career that spans three decades\, Brad Barr has cultivated a uniquely visceral\, disarmingly intimate approach to the guitar. If you’re already a fan of the Montreal-based Barr Brothers\, or the legendary improv-rock trio The Slip\, then you already know — it’s futile to try and categorize his ongoing experiments in sound and songwriting.\n \nHis musical journeys\, almost always in lockstep with sibling drummer Andrew Barr\, have taken them on chimerical paths: from all-night sets at jam festivals to the main stages of Newport Folk and Montreal Jazz; from tightly focused avant-rock collaborations to atmospheric reverb-laced folk ballads. Starting in the mid-90s\, their trio The Slip built a global cult following for their wide-ranging compositions and deeply improvisational sets.\n \nWhen the two brothers moved to Montreal in 2005\, they started a new chapter with experimental harpist Sarah Pagé and formed the Barr Brothers. The ensuing three albums have each been nominated for a Juno award\, and they have shared the bill with such artists as My Morning Jacket\, Calexico\, Bela Fleck\, The War on Drugs\, Tinariwen\, Built to Spill\, The Prodigy\, Emmylou Harris\, and others.\n.— \n\n\n\nBOX-OFFICE Tickets Are Available in The Zen Arcade During Hours of Operation. In 2001\, the idea to form a Van Morrison tribute band was formed\, and Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band\, with Joe Loskotaon keyboards and Vic Volare running the horn section. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002.\n \nMany musicians played with the band over the first few years\, and continue to do so today\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established: Dan Kowalke on guitar and backing vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota(keyboards\, backing vocals)\, Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare(sax\, flute) and Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano).\n \nThe band has expanded its content over the years to include rock and soul covers along with Terry’s own originals\, which have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing large crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, New York’s Times Square\, and once opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people.

Since fronting the Minnesota-based group Forty Watt Bulb\, Peterson has spawned two other successful roots projects: the twangy\, upbeat Dead Pigeons and bluegrass-influenced Boxstore Bird. \n \nPeterson has built a unique brand that transcends the genre. With clever\, dry humor and thought- provoking lyrics\, Peterson’s music is like oil over gravel. Drawing on influences from John Prine\, Tom Waits\, Cat Stevens\, Van Morrison\, among others\, Peterson offers the world upbeat tunes with a soft- spoken gravitas that belies his years. \n\n“Front man Drew Peterson is a top-flight lyricist\, a sardonic\, scatological songwriter who tempers his mournful insights with gallows humor…Peterson’s outlook is consistently grim and sometimes gross\, but it’s always delivered with a Kris Kristofferson-esque wink that keeps things from getting oppressive.” — Ira Brooker\, Art Hounds Minnesota Public Radio

Tight horn and Rhythm section set the tone\, immediately pulling fans to engage.—–Mae Simpson “It’s impossible to stand still during a Mae Simpson Music set. Simpson’s raspy\, dynamic voice is larger than life — but not as large as her uncontainable energy that radiates from the stage.” – Colleen Cowie (Minneapolis Public Radio) \nGrowing up in South Carolina\, Mae Simpson remembers her mother wearing out the records of Tina Turner and Patsy Cline. You can hear their echo in the music of the Minneapolis-based artist. Turner can be felt in Simpson’s fiery soulful voice\, stage energy\, and rock and soul feel on songs like Tryna be Right and Why. The timeless lyricism of Cline finds its home in nostalgic ballads like Cap Guns and Monsters. \nThe band includes Jorgen Wadkins on guitar\, David Kellerman on bass\, drummer and background vocalist Aaron Silverstein\, and trumpeter Paul Pederson. In 2023 they released Chandelier & Bloom.——————–Hot Like Mars is Chicago’s funkiest\, most soulful rock band\, turning heads with their exhilarating live performances and consistently compelling studio releases. The dynamic quintet – Anthony Perry (Lead Vocals / Keys)\, Frank Minella (Guitar / Vocals)\, Patrick Walsh (Guitar)\, Lamontae Norwood (Bass / Vocals)\, and Wes Julien (Drums / Vocals)\, has earned regional acclaim in recent years\, delivering high-energy\, genre-bending live shows that leave audiences spellbound. Leading with exceptional song craft\, intrepid improvisation\, and world-class instrumentation\, the group’s uplifting presence has earned them a reputation as one of the most exciting bands on the circuit today.

The station went on the air in 1978 with studios located in Walker Church and has been the voice of our community ever since. For their birthday celebration\, they have curated an entertaining evening of music and fun. \n— \nKFAI’s MinneCulture presents Live from Minnesota: Turtle Island Voices Rising. Celebrating Minnesota American Indian Month with hosts Deanna StandingCloud and Trish Cook and performances by Tufawon and Tiana Spotted Thunder. \n— \nThe event is free and open to the public. Simply sign up for your free tickets! \n— \nTufawon (2 for 1) is a Dakota/Boricua singer\, songwriter\, producer\, and teaching artist from Minneapolis. His name represents his mixed identity\, and his music is an honest reflection of his life experiences\, personal struggles\, his hopes and dreams for the future\, spirituality\, connectedness to the land\, love\, and the realities of the world. Musically\, he creates a broad spectrum of styles including Hip Hop\, RnB\, Dancehall\, Reggaeton\, and Afrobeats. He has put his life on the line to protect the water and our planet thru protest and community organizing. Not only is he dedicated to making music at the highest quality\, he is an active youth worker\, teaching what he knows and setting the bar high for the next generation of songwriters. \n— \nTiana Spotted Thunder is a Lakota recording artist from Oglala\, South Dakota\, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. She is a vocalist of many genres\, but specializes in singing traditional Lakota and indigenous music. She travels throughout North America to powwows as a backup singer for drum groups as well as performing solo for various audiences. Her vocal range reveals the pride of her identity as a Lakota woman. \n— \nDeanna StandingCloud is a mom\, playwright\, organizer\, artist\, community leader\, pow-wow emcee\, and advocate for Indigenous people. A member of the Red Lake Nation\, an Anishinaabe or Ojibwe tribe\, StandingCloud’s role as an emcee is just one aspect of a life that intertwines both tradition and modernity. She found her calling in weaving words and telling stories\, unlike the rest of her family who are more gifted in the visual arts. She studies Ojibwe\, the Anishinaabe language\, writes plays for New Native Theatre in St. Paul\, and performs as a stand-up comedian. As a leader and connector within her community\, she uses humor and storytelling to share her culture and break Native stereotypes. She hopes to pass down a love of her culture to her children\, while also leaving a legacy of a powerful Anishinaabe woman.—Trish Cook is a Red Laker with deep roots in South Minneapolis. She has been entertaining audiences for years with her humor and expressive storytelling. In addition to her individual performances Trish was a third of the nationally recognized Ojibwe Comedy Trio\, NDN Way Comedy and is currently focused on kwe comedy with Ace BAE Comedy! Big Auntie Energy Comedy! \n—KFAI’s MinneCulture programming is made possible by the support of the State of Minnesota and the Arts and Cultural Heritage Legacy Amendment.

With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits\, the band is converting audiences one show at a time\, from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe.\n \nMuch like the music\, the story spurns era\, expectation\, and classification. The often unbelievable\, sometimes harrowing\, and wholly inspiring journey of Davina Sowers gave birth to her eponymous band Davina and The Vagabonds in 2004. As the tale goes\, she grew up in the economically depressed Allegheny town of Altoona\, PA\, which she now describes as “awesome in the industrial era\, but horrible for high school.” She was adopted by her much older stepfather when he was in his 80s; he passed away when she was just 13. Through him and his Edison phonograph\, she first heard The Ink Spots\, Sidney Bechet\, Louis Armstrong and Louis Prima\, Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, and many others. “Great man. He was my angel and still is\,” she says.\n \nOn her own\, she vividly recalls hours in front of the record player where she religiously spun Led Zeppelin\, Black Sabbath\, and Simon and Garfunkel records belonging to her folk singer mom.\n \nTo this day\, Davina still refers to music as “my first and eternal love.” Despite early dalliances with classical piano and guitar\, she developed a heavy drug habit in high school\, which morphed into heroin dependency\, left her homeless\, sent her in and out of jail\, and brought on all manner of trouble. Kicking dope on the streets\, she “got clean\, started the band\, and worked [her] ass off every day since.”\n \nDavina and the Vagabonds shine every time they play. To date\, they’ve performed in forty-five states\, twelve European countries\, and two Canadian provinces. Not to mention\, they’ve earned feverish acclaim from the Chicago Tribune\, NPR\, and more in addition to performing on BBC’s international favorite late-night program Later… With Jools Holland and appearing on PBS’s Bluegrass Underground.\n—\n“Davina and the Vagabonds combat heartache with sugar and sass.”  DOWNBEAT MAGAZINE \n\n \n\nThank you to our sponsors\, partners\, & neighbors: \nSummit Brewing • DuNord Social Spirits • RKR Ganja Beverages • Nobool Presents • KFAI 90.3FM • Mpls.St.Paul Magazine • The Zen Arcade • Longfellow Rising • Lake Street Council • Minnesota State Arts Board • Moon Palace Books • Arbeiter Brewing\n\n \nThe Award-Winning* Under the Canopy series at The Hook & Ladder Theater returns with its uniquely seasonal urban footprint to the Longfellow neighborhood of South Minneapolis in 2025. *Voted Best in MN 2021 by Star Tribune readers.\n \nThe Hook has committed to having a food truck Under the Canopy throughout the 2024 season for our guests.
