SUMMARY:Urban Heat\, Rare DM\, & Stranger Gallery
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook and Ladder Theater \n\n\nDoors 8:00pm :: Music 8:30pm \n\n\n21+\n\nGA: $15 ADV / $20 DOS\n\n\n COVID-19 Policies\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nUrban Heat\, Rare DM\, & Stranger Gallery\n\n\n \n\n“A lightning rod of dark electro/proto-punk/new wave/synth wave/part goth/part industrial sound that is all the things but… simultaneously transcending them into something fresher.” – Laurie Gallardo\, KUTX 98.9\n \n \nUrban Heat are a 3-piece American post-punk band from Austin\, TX. The band formed in 2019 when multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jonathan Horstmann enlisted Kevin Naquin and Paxel Foley to form a live show based on his analog sound design. The result fuses dark 80’s stylings with modern flourishes\, with Horstmann’s throaty baritone delivering musings on existence and romanticism against an unrelenting industrial gothic pulse. Their live show is undeniably energetic and engaging\, earning them slots at Austin’s Levitation and Seattle’s Freakout Fest in 2021. They released 6 singles between 2019 and 2022 and while the pandemic saw their SXSW 2020 performance canceled\, they returned in 2022 as official artists.\n\nDance Music\, Dark Matter\, Direct Message\, Dungeon Master\, Distant Memory… People have tried to decipher the meaning behind the name Rare DM\, but really it’s the Brooklyn-based singer\, producer and multi-instrumentalist Erin Hoagg. Rare DM is Hoagg at her most vulnerable and visceral\, as she mines dates\, breakups and other adventures to make revealing\, romantic darkwave dance-pop music. With a collection of vintage analog synths\, Hoagg transforms the mundane into the magical\, transposing real DMs she’s sent and received into songs that reflect on the fractured nature of modern communication and online dating. Her songs are dark and deeply intimate\, rendering in raw detail the search for that special connection we all crave\, but rarely find. \nBack-of-the-class post-punks Stranger Gallery formed in the shadows and disintegration of 2020 for a series of outdoor shows. Veterans of the dark folk\, shoegaze\, and thrash scenes\, the band demonstrates equally broad emotional and sonic spectrums\, from twangy goth to blues punk\, with ballads\, and sardonic litanies.

The high-octane MC\, Cold Sweat\, delivers his Golden-Age Hip-Hop style over a variety of musical stylings. In addition to the usual fatback rhythms\, you may hear some undercurrents of outlaw country\, disco\, and funk. The group weaves a tapestry of sound taking the listener through grungy\, boom bap beats that inspire good times. And\, always\, a trip to the moon. Say it with me now [high – uh – lie] \nSpace Monkey Mafia \nFrom somewhere deep within the hydrogen-rich nebula\, NGC 2174\, a new take on high-powered\, horn-driven rock has emerged: Space Monkey Mafia. Founded in 2016\, the six-piece band is rooted in the best parts of 90s/00s ska and punk\, infused with a healthy dose of contemporary influence\, and combined with a lyrical urgency and message to meet the moment. \nSoctopus \nLofi/hip-hop/electronic/pop from the Twin Cities\, MN – FriendlyLightheartedAngst “we’re a party band!”

Yes\, Cornbread has been the recipient of numerous prestigious (Blues Hall of Fame\, Sally Award\, etc.) recognitions. We’ll have a holly jolly time as they help us celebrate the season. The band promises to incorporate rockin’ holiday tunes into their usual wide-array of Van Morrison and other rock songs. No matter if you’ve been naughty or nice\, this party will entertain you and your guests.\n \nThe Belfast Cowboys are a nine-piece\, horn-driven band from Minneapolis that specializes in the music of Van Morrison – mixing rock\, blues\, roots and soul sounds. Led by veteran songwriter and guitarist Terry Walsh and powered by a four-piece horn section\, the Cowboys have flourished in the renowned Minnesota music scene\, and have consistently packed houses and wowed crowds since 2002.\n \nTerry Walsh got his start playing in various Twin Cities rock bands and toured as Slim Dunlap’s bass player in 1997\, opening for Son Volt. In 2001 the idea to form a Van Morrison tribute band was formed\, and Terry spent the rest of the year learning Van songs and building an all-star band\, with Joe Loskota on keyboards and Vic Volare running the horn section. The band played their first show at the old 400 Bar on Saint Patrick’s Day 2002.\n \nMany musicians played with the band over the first few years\, and continue to do so today\, but the ‘A’ team was soon established: Dan Kowalke on guitar and backing vocals\, Joe Baumgart (bass)\, Dave Kirby and Dave Haugen (drums\, backing vocals)\, Joe Loskota (keyboards\, backing vocals)\, Paul Gronert (sax)\, Matt Hanzelka (trombone)\, Tim Martin (trumpet)\, Vic Volare (sax\, flute) and Terry Walsh (lead vocals\, guitar\, harmonica\, piano).\n \nThe band has expanded their content over the years to include rock and soul covers along with Terry’s own originals\, which have become fan favorites. Now a beloved staple in Minnesota\, the 9-piece Belfast Cowboys averaged over 120 shows a year before the pandemic. The bar-tested troubadours are known for playing epic sets at their weekly Minneapolis gigs and drawing large crowds to outdoor festivals. Occasionally they’ll venture beyond the Midwest to play Ireland\, Phoenix\, New York’s Times Square\, and once opened for the band Chicago in front of 15\,000 people.\n

While embracing the present\, “Growth Lines” also hearkens back to the brashness of the band’s 2008 self-titled debut album and proves that music is always better with friends. They’ve recruited heavyweight performers G Love\, Tropidelic\, Bumpin’ Uglies and Indubious to add flavor and texture to the soundtrack’s 11 or so tunes. Showcasing the veteran band’s unique ability to write songs that tug at our heartstrings while keeping our feet moving Growth Lines has something for every JWP fan\, new and old alike. \nFeed the Dog is an eclectic and action-packed\, experimental jam-grass act. The midwest based 4-piece masterfully blends soul-pleasing songwriting rich in imagery and storytelling with a genre bending\, shake-your-hips\, instrumental flair. Their high energy performances are driven by the unique and progressive approach of each player: imaginative melodies with graceful ambiance skillfully crafted on the violin\, tireless beats both dynamic and soulful confidently assembled on the drums\, driving low end with finesse and intention forged on the bass guitar\, and unique approach to playing the acoustic guitar blending fast picking bluegrass runs with the strength of blues and rock to evoke an emotional contrast between melancholy and hopeful.

SUMMARY:John Louis 'CD Release' with Bad Posture Club\, & Jon Rodine
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook and Ladder Theater \n\nDoors 7:00pm :: Music 7:30pm \n\n21+ \n\n$12 ADV / $17 DOS \n\n\n COVID-19 Policies\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nJohn Louis ‘CD Release’\nwith Bad Posture Club & Jon Rodine\n—- \nJohn Louis‘ latest album “For Everyone (Especially You)” will be officially released January 22\, 2024. This album includes two singles that Louis recorded with producer Shane Leonard and released in 2021\, and 10 new tracks recorded with co-producer Dex Wolfe in 2023. The story arc of the album is solid. The first few songs paint the picture of a life lived\, maybe not so well. The rest of the album pulls us through a journey of decline\, despair\, resignation\, death\, and the aftermath. Among the highlights are Roy Orbison-esque version of “I Wish I Remembered You”\, “Another Day”\, which some say sounds like a mix of Crazy Horse and the Replacements\, and “Wake Me Up”\, which has a devistativing slow build and instrumental arrangement. The album features the contributions of a strong bench of talented musicians\, including Siri Undlin\, Hannah Hebl\, Jimmy Johnson\, Clifton Nesseth\, Mark Ettinger\, Robbie Weisshaar\, Bryan Hanna\, Jeremy Boettcher: bass (tracks 2\, 4) Ben Lester\, Sam Kassirer\, Shane Leonard and Dex Wolfe.\n \n\nBad Posture Club is a Minneapolis-based folk duo made up of Maren Day and Morgan Kavanagh. Their songwriting explores themes of home-places\, memory\, and family\, finding inspiration in the strange relationship between human softness and the unyielding societal structures we both participate in\, and push against. When reinterpreting traditional folk songs\, they carve out space and agency for queer voices. Purposefully open and sparse\, they craft intricate and experimental harmonies with their two voices\, banjo\, guitar\, and sometimes a 100 year old pump organ. Bad Posture Club invites the listener to hear the power in quiet\, intimate music\, and offers warmth and reflection through song.\nJon Rodine is a singer and songwriter based in Minnesota. Drawing on sources like Dan Penn\, Doug Sahm\, Bob Dylan and beyond\, his music is songdriven\, a blend of Americana\, groove-oriented rock’n’roll and country soul. His latest album “Last Star”–his first collection of original material–has been getting notice around the country. “Eleven songwriting gems” says Mondophonic.com\, but “his strongest asset is his voice”. “Authentic\, unpretentious…funky\, heartbreaking”\, said Ellen Stanley\, in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

On February 2\, 1959\, Buddy Holly\, Ritchie Valens and JP Richardson (the Big Bopper) performed at The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake\, Iowa. The plane crash that occurred hours later changed music history forever.  Holly\, Valens and Richardson were killed in the crash.  They had been on a flight to Moorhead\, MN.  Young Dion DiMucci was broken-hearted.  The nineteen-year-old had lost some dear friends\, but the scheduled performance in Moorhead wasn’t canceled.  Dion took the stage in Minnesota along with a new\, unknown artist\, fifteen-year-old Bobby Vee of Fargo\, ND.  A call had gone out on radio stations in the Fargo/Moorhead area looking for local talent replace the deceased superstars.  Vee answered the call\, and as they say\, the rest is history.     \nA Hard Day’s Night tells the entire story with tributes to artists who performed at the Surf Ballroom on February 2\, 1959 and the Moorhead Armory on February 3\, 1959. This faithful tribute features the songs made famous by Holly\, who was considered one of the foremost pioneers of rock and roll.  It has played the best venues including a performance on the main stage at the Surf Ballroom in February\, 2023 and the main stage at Moondance Jam in Walker\, MN.  This show commemorates the 65th anniversary of “the day the music died.”  It is a must-see for those who remember as well as a brand-new generation of fans.\n \nSET TIMES1:30pm – Set 1Intermission2:30pm – Set 2

SUMMARY:An Evening with Jill Sobule
DESCRIPTION:EVENT DETAILS \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nThe Hook and Ladder Theater \n\nDoors 6:00pm :: Music 7:00pm \n\n21+ \n\n\nTickets: Reserved Seats  $25\n\n\n\n COVID-19 Policies\n \n\n \n \n\n	\n\n	\n \n \n \n EVENT DESCRIPTION \n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\nAn Evening with Jill Sobule\n\nWe’re proud to announce the return of Jill Sobule to our theater for this intimate\, seated show. Jill has released a dozen of albums spanning three decades of recording\, tackling such topics as the death penalty\, anorexia nervosa\, shoplifting\, reproduction\, the French Resistance\, adolescent malaise\, LGBTQ issues\, and the Christian Right\, to name a few – with her trademark wit and aplomb.\n \nThe Denver-born songwriter/guitarist/singer’s work is at once deeply personal and socially conscious\, seriously funny and derisively tragic. While her songs cover expansive thematic ground\, they benefit greatly from Jill’s subtle intelligence and skillful light-handedness. No sloganeering flag-and-fist waving here\, but rather portrait-&-story songs about human beings\, real and imagined\, which allow us to step back from the issues they tackle\, be they individual or societal\, and to relate to them as we would to a close friend.\n \nOn stage\, she entertains\, amuses\, provokes\, and more often than not\, takes her audiences on an emotional roller coaster\, from comedy to pathos in a few bars of music\, often within the same song.\n \nJill Sobule’s recording career began in 1990 with the album Things Here Are Different \, produced by Todd Rundgren. Radio took notice thanks to the single’s “Too Cool To Fall In Love.” Her 1995 self-titled album brought her mainstream commercial and critical success with two hit singles: the satirical gem “Supermodel” from the movie Clueless and “I Kissed A Girl” (the original)\, the first ever openly queer-themed Billboard Top 20 record.\n \nSobule has performed with Neil Young\, Billy Bragg\, Steve Earle\, Cyndi Lauper\, Tom Morello\, Warren Zevon\, and John Doe. She inducted Neil Diamond into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. She has shared billing with Don Henley\, Joe Jackson\, Warren Zevon\, the influential LA punk band X\, and Lloyd Cole & The Negatives. She regularly co-stars with comedian/actress/author/SNL alumni Julia Sweeney in their Jill & Julia Show\, an unusual and mesmerizing combination of song and storytelling. A road warrior\, she plays more than 100 shows a year.\n \nIn November of 2019 Jill sang a song as herself on an episode of The Simpsons. Her latest record is “Nostalgia Kills”\, produced by Ben Lee and released on her own Pinko Records label. Jill’s theater credits include a musical adaptation of the Broadway classic “Yentl”\, “Prozak and the Platypus”\, and “Times Square”. Her latest\, “Fuck 7th Grade”\, was postponed due to Covid\, but was performed and filmed for three days at a make-shift drive-in over the Summer. The musical is a finalist for the Lambda Literary awards in LGBTQ Drama category this June.\n \n“Jill Sobule can claim her place among the stellar New York singer-songwriters of the last decade. Topical\, funny and more than a little poignant …grown-up music for an adolescent age.”  -New York Times\n

He was born and raised in Tanzania\, East Africa\, making music with many African Bands\, but it was when he heard Bob Marley’s Album\, KAYA\, that he realized his fate: Reggae. The powerful message Marley made with music inspired Innocent to do the same. Innocent moved to the US in 1989 and formed the group Les Exodus.

It has been said\, “You don’t just like Joseph Huber’s music. You feel it’s something that the rest of the world needs to hear\, and how criminal it is that it isn’t spreading far and wide.” That sentiment could be related to the fact that the voices which Huber unearths are subtle and take more than a hurried listen to truly absorb. A person who appears reserved and matter-of-fact in everyday speech brings forth songs that are anything but that.
