Take your choice in how to label them – Punk\, UK82\, Crusty\, etc\, – there lies the attraction and consequent reason for their popularity\, the band epitomizes non-conformity and connects with people in many different scenes.\n \nForming in 1980\, recording and releasing a series of live and demo cassette tapes on their own Bluurg label\, they continued to release music throughout the 80’s – building a powerhouse of a back catalog that completely stands the test of time. Their debut LP ‘The Day the Country Died’ (1983)\, with its Orwellian influence\, is considered by many to be a classic and has sold in excess of 100\,000 copies. The second album\, ‘From the Cradle to the Grave’\, came swiftly the following year (1984)\, and although the same frenetic pace is in evidence\, this marks a significant musical development for the band. In 1985 Subhumans broke up\, citing the usual musical differences\, although had managed to release a third\, maybe ironically entitled\, LP ‘Worlds Apart.’ A final EP was released posthumously in 1986\, ‘29:29 Split Vision\,’ a further demonstration of how far the band had come musically from their initial leanings.\n \nDick Lucas subsequently joined Culture Shock and then formed political ska-punk band Citizen Fish in 1990\, both bands releasing many albums\, and still playing today. Subhumans had a couple of reunion shows in the nineties\, before a more permanent return for the 21st century\, including 2 major tours of the US\, the first resulting in the ‘Live in a Dive’ LP. The Subhumans then released a further studio album in 2007\, ‘Internal Riot\,’ again on Bluurg Records. The band is still passionate and angry\, illustrated by Dick saying “Being in a band is the source of most of my passion and drive! The live experience of sharing it with people keeps it ongoing\, the release of anger\, frustration and initially negative/destructive states of mind is a release from the downward spiral of keeping it all bottled up and it feels positive/constructive as a result.”\n \nThe band have recently written ten new songs\, which Pirates Press Records are thrilled to be releasing\, and are embarking on a year of touring in both Europe and North America! First a split with The Restarts before a 12” of their own comes out in October of 2019!  guest Derek St. Holmes\n\n—\n\nApril Wine is a Canadian rock band formed in 1969. Originally based in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, the band enjoyed international success in the 1970s and 1980s\, releasing more than 20 albums since 1971. \n \nApril Wine’s extensive discography includes numerous gold and platinum selling albums featuring mega-hits like ‘Roller’\, ‘I Like to Rock’\, ‘You Could Have Been a Lady’ and others. Best known for their international top 40 hit ‘Just Between You And Me’\, an iconic power ballad that made them the very first Canadian band on MTV\, April Wine went on to release over twenty albums and have received a combined total of 11 Juno Award nominations in the Group Of the Year\, Album of the Year\, and Best Selling Single categories.  \n \nIn 2009\, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame and were honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award for being part of Canadian Music History for 40 years\, and in 2010 the band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.  \n———– \nIt all began in 1974 when Derek St. Holmes’ band Scott opened a gig for Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. Nugent was making a name for himself around the Midwestern portion of the United States\, but thus far had been unable to take his music to the next level.  After seeing\, and hearing\, the young St. Holmes on stage\, he knew what was missing and invited Derek to join his band. Derek brought a strong set of pipes\, solid musicianship and songwriting skills to Nugent’s music\, and in March of 1975 the world was introduced to him via Nugent’s self-titled debut album.  While it was Nugent slinging down the guitar licks\, it was Derek’s voice all over FM radio singing the soon to be classics “Stranglehold\,” “Stormtroopin” and “Just What the Doctor Ordered.” In addition\, Derek wrote\, arranged and sang the classic tune “Hey Baby.” Derek quickly became regarded as one of the best voices on the international rock scene\, all at the tender age of 22 years old.  Nugent and St. Holmes continued their winning combination for three more iconic albums\, Free for All in 1976\, Cat Scratch Fever in 1977 and Double Live Gonzo in 1978.. Derek also continued his on again/off again relationship with Nugent in both the 1980s\, and ‘90s\, co-writing several songs on Ted’s comeback album Spirit of Wild in 1996. \nAfter years of Nugent fans begging Ted for Derek’s return\, St. Holmes was invited by the Motor City Madman in 2011 to once again take his place on the Nugent stage. Derek appeared on Nugent’s 2014 album ShutUp&Jam\, singing. Between 1986 and 1992\, the band released three popular albums and became an important part of the Twin Cities music scene. Many of the fan’s favorite songs (“Stupid Boy”\, “Color of Her Eyes”\, “She’s Happy”\, “Drank So Much” and many others) are credited to the exceptionally passionate writing skills possessed by Zellar\, however Dankert has also contributed some of the compositions \, including “Time Heals”\, and “Blues Mary”.\n \nArguably\, Zellar’s “I Wanna Drive the Zamboni” is the band’s best-known song\, having been featured in the movies D2: The Mighty Ducks and Mystery\, Alaska\, as well as on the television program Malcolm in the Middle.
