Dustin James “PAPER STAR” Cassette Release Show
w/ Cha Cha 9, Canary Room, & THE TRUE TWO
Dustin James “PAPER STAR” cassette release party with sets from Dustin James with Nik Eskola and Dan Hornsby, Cha Cha 9, and a solo set from Canary Room along with THE TRUE TWO spinning records all night.
Paper Star is the latest album from Minneapolis-based songwriter Dustin James of Green/Blue and Waveless. The sound of Paper Star combines the subtlety, darkness, and experimentation of these acts, but is also a more intimate and contemplative departure from his previous projects. With the help of Nik Eskola of the Teenage Moods and Dan Hornsby of True Green, He introduces these songs to the stage for the first time.PAPER STAR is out October 22 2024 on Manic Static.
CHA CHA 9 is a collaboration between Veronica Torres (Pill, Mexican Summer/Dull Tools; P.E., Wharf Cat Records) and Andrew Jansen (Loud Sun). Their sound exists on the retro-pop spectrum with experimental and proto-punk influences. Torres applies her playful word-smithing with a tad of grit to Jansen’s angular and nostalgic guitar. They are joined onstage with a rotating cast of diy peers to fill out the live sound.
“I’d ask you to remember it if I saw you.” The opening line of folk rock group Canary Room’s eponymous debut is a microcosm of songwriter Maddy Heide’s favorite themes. Precious memories are held between loved ones, straining to maintain connection despite vast distances of land and time. While influenced by the forward thinking work of Joni Mitchell and Adrianne Lenker, these songs create worlds entirely their own. A group of friends before they were a band, Heide’s ensemble intuitively colors outside the careful lines she has crafted. On “Lake Effect”, amid the flawlessly sensitive arrangement, Heide lets us know her goal: “I wanted to take it all and give it all away.” Canary Room has generously done exactly that, and we are all better off for it.~ Joan Kelsey
